I used the Spirl deck and came up the the 8 of cups in a partners desire for me. After clearing up an argument. His desire actually was that he wanted to start over again with me. So my question is there another way that I can look at this card instead of wanting to move in a new direction.
Thanks,
Robin

This is HIS desire for YOU, yes? Not YOUR desire, right?
So, he wants YOU to walk away from all those old cups, the old cups of your previous relationship with him and go in a new direction with him. To start fresh. To pretend none of the past happened and you're both meeting each other for the first time, romancing each other under the moon, following your instincts, seeing where they lead you.
That's how I'd read it. I'm understanding this correctly, right? It's not a card about what you SHOULD do, or a card about what YOU want to do--it's what HE wants you to do. And given that, it seems apt. He wants to start over--and he wants you to want to start over.

HI Robin, I use Spiral and I got out the 8 Cups to have another look for you.
So you want something other than " wanting to move in a new direction"? from this card. As I cannot see the surrounding cards this is only a hint. You can move away from goals as well as towards them. You can also stand still and remember how it was before you contemplated moving in a new direstion.
Maybe you can meditate on what you might be leaving behind. Maybe it is as Thirteen suggests, no movement but a start over a bit like Ground Hog day. Remember you can see the wistful Robin in the Spiral card, or you see what your partner sees in the card -a wistful Robin? Bring what you want into the cards when it concerns you. You are reading for yourself. Take care ~Rosanne

Thank you Thirteen and Rosanne. This makes so much sense now.Yes Thirteen, you understood correctly. Him making a new start was exactly what he wanted to do and I didn't see that card that way. thank you thank you. Now my complete reading makes sense. I kept thinking of the card so negative and in the end it was a positive desire.

The Lady is looking over her shoulder, its alot different from the traditional RWS - this card is giving you a choice. Maybe its about the relationship that will go in a slightly different direction that it did before.
Never noticed before - there is a snake on the steps in front of the woman.

OMG... You're right! I hadn't noticed that either. This is actually one of my very favorite cards in this deck, and the snake definitely adds something new! Hmmm. The choice suddenly seems to need rethinking. How do you see the snake contributing to the meaning of this card?
I'm inclined to go with the original meaning of the card, albeit with a qualification. In other words, there is an admonishment to leave the situation while one can still do so gracefully, but to be aware of the fact that the path ahead may not be easy or straightforward.

How do you see the snake contributing to the meaning of this card?
In pagan mythos (as compared to Judeo-Christian), the snake is a symbol of wisdom, healing and intuition. So I would say that would contriubute to the meaning.
In other words, there is an admonishment to leave the situation while one can still do so gracefully, but to be aware of the fact that the path ahead may not be easy or straightforward.
But remember, this is his desire for her. It is not advice (an admonishment) from the deck as to what she should or should not do. Questions about card meanings, if they turn up in a spread, have to be tempered by placement.

I was speaking of the meaning more generally--in the abstract. Sorry I didn't make this clear.
