Just curious...I mainly work with the major arcana only, but I was wondering what card combinations would indicate marriage? Does anybody think it's the Hierophant + Lovers?? I did a reading for my friend and her boyfriend and she wanted to know if this person is "the one" and the 4 card spread came out the Hierophant in the middle, Temperance to the left, the Fool to the right, and Lovers on top.....Hierophant+Lovers...

That sounds creditable but the fool and temperance would offset me a little. Maybe it is a good possibility, but there are some things that need to be worked out beforehand and to not go in completely blind, although the ignorance as bliss would be a learning experience in the marriage.

with the fool and temperance, I would say don't rush into a marriage.
The phrase which popped into my head was "fools rush in where angels fear to tread".

Unfortunately this is something that happens VERY seldom on this earth. Maybe he's "the one" for the next couple of years.
What cards would I expect to see for a long(er)-lasting relationship?
Ace/10 of Pentacles
Queen/King of Pentacles
Empress/Emperor
World

Maybe Devil - chained to each other - and hopefulley: passion and sexual attraction.

I agree that the fool indicates don't rush in to anything. The lovers probably means a choice will have to be made eventually regarding long-term commitment.

I take it you were only using trumps?
Temperance - balance harmony, working together as a partnership.
Hierophant - each concentrating on their own view of the relationship. Going inwards to gather perspective.
The Fool - Having decided to go for it. A leap into the void.
Lovers - Choice, growing mutual attraction, deepening of feelings etc
I dont' see marriage here...but things look good for the time being:)
Edited to say: what am I talking about?! I was interpreting the Hierophant as The Hermit...
Yes, with the Heirophant marriage is a possibility.

The only card that is related specifically to Marriage,
according to the old Continental books is 5 of Cups.

5 of cups? Is this true? Isn't the 5 of cups seen as a loss, sorrow and breaking up...?

5 of Cups according to The Continental School:
S.L.Mathers: Union, Junction, Marriage, Inheritance.
A.E.Waite (who copied from Mathers):
Generally favourable; a happy marriage;
also patrimony, legacies, gifts, success...
All of which goes back to Etteilla and Eliphas Levi,
but I think all these men were asking their Mamas.

I personaly see marriage in the Sun card and it does mean happy marriage . Could also be Two of Cups in combination with Lovers. The Hermit and Lovers tell us that the tme has come to start a new phase in the relationship, to bring the new energy in, new behavior and attitude.
