A curious Question?

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 19 Apr 2005, and now archived in the Forum Library.

I just looked over some posts here and it seems to me that some of the membies are guys!!
Are men really into tarot?
I thought it was only girl kind of thing!
Please explain!!!!

similia  19 Apr 2005
Yes some of us are  and just cause we want to. :)

mumbling to himself... bloody women... think they own the world.... just cause I still haven't taken out the garbage.... sex.....better get a new muffler for my car, its not noisy enough....mmm could go a beer about now..... sex....footies on soon..... ;)

Seriously could you girls please all get together, and decide if you prefer us to be sensitive new agey guys only, cavemen only, or a bit off both. It is very confusing trying to work out what yo want, and much worse when you seem to prefer to not tell us!

PS Claudia, just having fun here :D I'm wondering what deck you use Claudia? Your profile says the Waite-Smith deck and the Marseille. There's quite a lot of testosterone charged blokes involved in the making of those decks...

similia  19 Apr 2005
PS a recent question on the same topic from a confused man :)

Similia, have you seen the updated version of "Bedazzled"? Brendan Fraser plays a really great "sensitive new agey" guy who serenades his lady love with a song about sunsets and dolphins, only to have her dump him for some dumb beefcake mimbo. :)

Welcome, Claudia! Are you named after the Claudia from The Vampire Lestat and Interview with a Vampire? I never really cared for the books, but the movie version was, IMO, awesome. So poignant, the relationship between her and Louis.

You'll find as you wander the Marseilles halls of Aeclectic Tarot Forum that there are indeed quite a number of the Y chromosomers hanging about here.

Yes. Yes. Yes. :D

*ahem*

Actually, Claudia, some of the people here that are more in tune to the cards are menfolk. What readings I've had done over the forums in the past, the guys seem to do better than the ladies for the most part. For many people it's the other way around. It all just depends.

The men also helped out more when I was just beginning to get into tarot. Womenfolk tend to go into long, drawn-out explanations. They got way too deep way too fast until I had a basic grasp on what was going on.

Now you see what you've done Cricket...??? We still don't know if we're supposed to hug you, hit on the head and drag you back to the cave, or a bit of both. :D I would ask my tarot cards for advice, but I'm afraid I might not be allowed to do that either ;)

I did see Bedazzled ncefafn. (although I wouldn't again ;) ) This is exactly the problem, you women folk can't figure out what you want, and then compain when we don't give it to you. (clearly I have issues, I am so sorry to Claudia for turning her perfectly reasonable question about gender differences in tarot into a battle of the sexes :) )

I can't remember where it was, but recently there was a chat on this same issue. I really liked Rainwolf's take. (paraphrasing quite a lot here) "it's time for you lot to stop accusing us of being too simple, and take responsibility for being too complicated yourselves" :D

PS thanks Astrid, I like you too :)

Oh, no. I didn't do anything but answer truthfully. It's just that most men don't know that they're supposed to instantly be able to tell which 'yes' is needed at the moment and fill the void accordingly. Lazy bums.

Not only are there men here, but some of them are gay, too.

Some of the men on this forum even wrote the book you are reading, and possibly designed the decks you are using.

Please come into the twentieth century, much less the twenty-first! :smoker:

PS - there is nudity in many tarot decks, too.

Claudia, why did you think tarot was only a "girl kind of thing" ??? I am REALLY curious to know. Because to me, it's like asking "are men really into art/literature/etc?" Honestly, did you think Arthur Waite or Aleister Crowley were female?

There are lots of men who read tarot, and NOT all of them are gay. And NOT all of them go around being sensitive and new agey all the time.

Yeah, some of them are real cavemen, drag their women around by the hair, expect dinner on the table when they get home from work, only drink beer ... those sort of men!

So the males are men and the females are girls?? hmmm. I thoght this kind of sexism was long gone as well as the gender stereotypes presumed in the opening question.

I thought it was an intelligent kind of thing - please explain:P

I like a mixture of both - now where are they?:D

Little Baron  20 Apr 2005
There are many men on the forum, as there are women. There are many sexualities as well. I like this mix, because there are so many views, exeriences and angles to learn from. Nothing is set in stone and no decks are exclusive - there are many people on here who use the 'Gay Tarot' and understand it's concepts, ideas and images perfectly, even though they are not gay. I am sure many men own the decks that have a feminist edge to them - you don't have to be female to appreciate feminism. I am glad that this is one place where stereo-types do not exist so much.

I, myself, am male. Sometimes, due to 'usernames' it can be hard to know whether someone is male or female, and some, like me, do not add it in their profiles. I think that there is still a little of pre-conceptions existing, due to the 'well-known' images of female readers/fortune tellers dressed up as gypsies at tables with cards and crystal balls, still lingering from past tales and movies. I think this image is as demeaning to women who read the tarot, as it is to the men that are often excluded.

Simone  20 Apr 2005
LOL :D before you all scare Claudia away, let me ask you a question ;) :joke:

s/he who never fell prey to a stereotype may pull a face ;) :P

so who? eh? ;) :joke:

and to answer similia's question: I guess we want it all, depending on the mood we're in ;)

be new-agey and sensitive when we are PMSing and Cavemen when it's the other side of the Wheel of Fortune }) I guess that's a good guideline ;)

That image is also demeaning to Romanians.

my guess is, from reading Claudia's first post, is she is from a Land Where Men Grunt And Slobber Alla Time And Shoot Things. So it's not in her experience to encounter malefolk who study things like Tarot.

similia - let me tell you brother, it doesn't necessarily get easier as you get older and more married...

I know some sensitive new agey guys very into tarot who look just like cavemen - and some very insensitive old-fashioned phallocratic types that look like butter wouldn't melt.

Women like men who are strong enough to be open and gentle, and sexy enough to be rough.

Complicated? Ask your tarot - it has all the answers ;)

Claudia - my then BF got me into Tarot. He was most definitely not gay. Lots of men do it - gay and straight - it's not a sexual identity thing. It was invented by men, after all (probably gay and straight back then too). Sounds like you need to reassess what men are - all-round...

Of course Claudia is a wild untamed creature of the night, with rather unhelpful parent figures so I will forgive her. ;)

Well I asked my tarot. "Tarot" I said, "what do women want?"

I guess I shouldn't have used the thoth deck!! :D

It seems women want
a) The Empress
b) The Devil
c) Adjustment

I have my opinion on what this means }) I leave you to yours' ;)

Hi to Dark Angel_Claudia and from someone who is also from both of 'your' land. I must admit (sheepishly) that I also was (pleasantly) surprised by the amount of males that are interested in tarot. Eyes now wide OPEN and I am lovin' it!

Hmmm what women want??? What day of the week is it!

Empress - to create a beautiful life
Devil - passionate sex (absolutely!)
Adjustment - To be with someone who yings there yang or vica versa! (make of that what you will)

Similia, just come over to my side and you will never be confused again.
btw I have seen your pic, and believe me you are welcomed;)})

similia  20 Apr 2005
 well Astrid has prophesied a significant red headed love interest for me in the near future.... I thought I had sussed out who that would be. It seems I was "gravely mistaken, about a great many things" (PS that was a pop culture reference, did any one spot it...??;) ). Thanks for the complement anyways.

Helvetica seems to think I should put up with confusion or give up on people all together and try farm animals :D Of course Helvetica can get away with being a riddle as she is a fair bit better looking than your typical mystery :)

I can live without the new agey part, (he might be tempted to sing about dolphins, lol) but the sensitive part I keep.

And yes, my dear Simone, that is a good guideline.

I mean, I don't want a caveman drinking beer and burping all the time, but at least someone who can empathize (????) with me a couple of times each semester...lol, and im not asking for understanding, that would be too much to ask....LOL *joke*

aaanyway, i like men just the way they are, the difference is what puts the spice on our lives, making it sweet and sour doesn't it?

And Claudia (yeyy colleague, we share the name!) yes, guys use, study and read tarot the same as women are president of countries, and drive trucks!!

love,

Clau

It gets better! Straight, serious, smoking, wine-drinking, mathematical and sporty male Tarot readers exist!

As for what women want - here's another: Your heart on a skewer (otherwise known as - the 3 of Swords for you too, baby).

Don't feel bad. Not even the women tarot readers in this area feel comfortable doing it openly. Stupid bible belt anyway... :P

Seriously, a few years ago my inlaws 'caught' me reading the forums and about blew a gasket because I was doing something with all that 'devil worshipping evil stuff'! There are only a few people in the state that know I have -a- deck, let along -multiple- decks, and even fewer that know they get used.

I'm trying to get there - the serious male tarot reader part, that is. I've long since given up on impressing anyone.
