You don't HAVE to, but you can. Some people shuffle thru their cards, some burn incense and meditate. It all depends on you. I just got my first deck today, the Cosmic, so I'm just shuffling thru them and admiring the cards. :) Some people sleep with their decks under their pillow. There's a lot of things you can do!

I just look through my cards and put my energy into them.

my ritual is to ravenously tear open the box (without damaging anything) and hungrily looking through and soaking in the images as I drool over each card. Once I take in the visual survey...they are mine!!!! Mmmmmmyyyy, prrreciousssssssss...

Hmmm open box and begin studying deck one card at a time. Make notes in journal about what comes to mind. Meditate on card I can not figure out. Just enjoy new deck. Play with it daily and learn from it.

I agree
This is all about how you feel and think and of course this is different to all of us
when i got my first deck - not long ago - i simply spend at least half an hour every day shufling, looking, enjoying and learding it - i had lots of fun really!

I always have to give it the smell test. I love that ink smell!

All I do is get familiar with it.
Sometimes it takes only one lookthrough and we're good to go, and other times it takes some more study before I feel comfortable with the images.

I, like vadella, shuffle through the cards and put my energy into them. You can also sleep with it since it will be close to you and not disturbed by the outside energies. I wouldn't recommend taking it into the outside world until it has enough of your energy and just to be safe you should say a prayer since a lot of the different energies are out of your power to control.

There is no ritual... Tarot is not a religion.
Look through your deck, look at the cards, think about them, shuffle them and read them. Really.

I make sure i am the first one to look through the deck, and i shuffle them a bit, adn sleep with them under my pillow for a week.

This sounds so familiar to me
Once I have my preciousssss unwrapped I check if all the cards are there and then I take a closer look at them all, I often take out the cards I like the most and get familiar with them first. I don't like reading with a deck I am not familiar with ~ I just feel when I am ready to use a deck. Until then I enjoy just looking at them.
