Holy, Moses ....
I'm 25 years old and I was talking about the tarot last night at the Mess Hall (where I was giving a reading) and something dawned on me. I've been working with tarot since the Age of 5 (starting with the major arcana) and that's how I actually learned how to count (also using live baby chickens on my grandmother's farm) and read.
2005 Was my 20 year mark for reading tarot .... wow....
I started reading tarot when my grandmother went blind, so she would shuffle and I would lay out the cards for her and describe the minor arcana to her. I would count the number of each cups, "circle things","sticks" and "knives" and tell her what the suit is.
By second grade I was doing regular readings using books and by 5th grade I needed no books. By 8th grade my other sense started kicking in and I gave a reading in a "How do do" presentation and creeped out the poor woman in awe. Then everyone else wanted one.
Where and when did you have your first tarot experience?

CONGRATULATIONS:D
What an interesting life you've led thus far:)
My elder sister had a Thoth Deck when I was about 15 or 16, that was my first experience of Tarot:)

Cool story! I did a tarot presentation in school (high school), and then was forever more associated with satanic activities! My parents got a call from the *concerned* principal, and I was so touched by how they stuck up for me and my tarot interest, even though they really didn't understand what tarot was themselves.

cool story!
My first experience with tarot was in the 10th grade. German class one day was boring, so my friend took out his new deck and began to give readings. I am not in contact with him anymore, I wonder if he still does it?
Anyway afterthat...nothing until recently whenI stumpled here.

Ya ... i've had a pretty colorful life. I'm active duty U.S Air Force and when I used to work for the Aircraft Maintenence Squadrons (the guys who fix the jets) I would have a deck in my locker. It was a mary hanson roberts deck all used and roughed up from the greasy oily hands... and anyone who works on airplanes knows that you can wash your hands 50 times and that stuff wont come off for days sometimes.
I'd read a few of the guys after work and during lunches.
My grandmother was from Naples Italy and had a strong connection with the spirits. She took me to a place called Lily Dale in NY when i was very young so I was exposed to spritualism at a very young age.
She had the traditional Ryder Waite deck that she used, but my aunt used a small black and white Alester Crowly deck .. it could have been the Thoth or a version of it, I don't remember .It was written in Swiss.
When she found out who Alester Crowley was she claimed the deck was evil so she burned it and bought the Angel Tarot. I started working with that and my grandmother basically retired her deck and my aunt bought me my First Deck the Hanson Roberts Deck because it is a family traditon that a girl gets bought her first tarot deck at a certain age from the "family". If a girl wants a deck before that age, she can buy one but the offical "family deck" is supposed to be a girls very first deck. It's something my Great Grandmother started, but she mostly worked with tea leaves until later in her life she picked up tarot.
What was yall's first deck?
How did you obtain it?
Who or what has influenced your tarot reading?

Oh this makes me feel SO old. I started reading about the time you were born.
My first deck was the Swiss 1JJ.
I'm going off to look at my wrinkles now....

Valkyriesong how I love your "subtitle" - "scaring people since 1985"! I started reading ordinary playing cards when I was in my teens - but I scared myself silly because I was so accurate and I gave up. Three years ago I started attending a "developing intuition" course and that, eventually, led me to tarot, even the idea of which, needless to say, had previously scared me rigid. To have had a background such as yours where tarot was accepted for what it is and not as something sinister and frightening must have been wonderful.

you know what ... i like just made that up as i was making my profile too ROFLMAO. I've stuck with tarot. when i get back to the states I do want to learn more about reading playing cards i've ALWAYS WAnted to do that. ... because its something different but i like my tarot and my collection. I guess some people collect base ball cards, some collect belly button lint and some people collect pez dispensers. *shuffles my hanson roberts deck*
for practice .. i recommend this to ANYONE .. when you learn the meanings ... for practice take your tarot cards to a local bar. Seriously .. take em to a bar and read people for free. (I did at this one biker bar back in Virginia a couple years ago) and even if you are not on point .. people dont care ... they'll still buy ya a brew .. but it will get you used to working with people none the less. ya know?
ya im kind of rugged btw just so you know..

I love these Grandmother stories, Valkyriesong . It makes me curious to know more.
How far back does divination go in your family?
How did your grandmother explain how and/or why the tarot works ?
Did she have a story relating to the origin of the cards ?
Did she have a difficult time socially decades ago because of the tarot - did she choose to hide it from some people ?
Pardon me for the interrogation, but enquiring minds want to know. I will understand if you don't have time or choose not to answer.
As for my own tarot beginnings, I was a secretive and naughty child who was reading concealed Sybil Leek books at about the age of 12 back in the 60's/70's. My first tarot deck was the Hoi Polloi version of the Rider Waite , also a secret. 1. Shuffle shuffle - Death. 2. Shuffle shuffle-Death 3. Shuffle shuffle- Death. That was enough for a while.

Wow Valkyriesong,
You're so lucky. I truly wish I could have had that kind of experience behind me. In a week from today it will be one year since I picked up my first Tarot deck (The Haindl Tarot), I now have 12 decks. Next month I will turn 49. If I could have had your life, when I think of all the mistakes I could have avoided if I had found Tarot sooner(sigh).
Actually I think I learnt about Tarot from Aeclectic. I saw a banner ad for them on a site when I used to like to go where they had computer generated Rune readings. I came here to Aeclectic read about Tarot and knew it was something I needed to do. Looked at all the decks and the artwork of the Haindl was initially the one that appealled most to me...although it took a while till I joined you all here. LOL
All my experiences are reading for myself, although once I did do a reading for a friend. Still it had been profound in my life and very life affirming and life altering.
My favourite now is really an Oracle deck, but I am totally in love with my Faeries Oracle. I am sure it will be forever.:-)
