This deck is exsquisite (as I've made very clear in the "tarot decks" forum), and the Five of Pentacles is one of my favorite cards, and it "appears" to fit the traditional meanings fairly well. But the Author pains the 5 of Pent's to be much more pleasant than I could ever believe it to be? What do you all think he might be thinking?

Well, the image shows a winged female in a sitting position, who does not look too happy to me; but I do agree that the interpretation in the LWB is a little off particularly for the upright positon rest, relaxation, meditaion, relief, vacation, sweetness, sincerity, serenity, as opposed to the reversed meaning that better describes this card's meaning in my opinion weariness, exhaustion, illness, withdrawal, rejection
Most RWS decks show the image on this card as a rather haggard or sick couple, as opposed to just one person.
I dont think you have to follow any of these interpretations in your readings; you may in fact invent yours or just go by the vibes accordingly. But the fives in general are not considered to be the most optimistic cards, so you may want to use your intuition and whatever information you have regarding a particular reading, bearing this in mind.

One of the things that I found frustrating with traditional interpretations of the tarot happened to be cards that meant basically the same thing whether they were inverted or not. In such cases, I felt that it really limited the idea expressed by a certain card and ignored the opposite aspect.
With few exceptions, no card is 100% positive or negative, so it seemed to me that using the inverse to express the opposite aspect made sense.
However, I realize not everyone holds this view, so I fully support people finding their own interpretations of any particular card. The book, just outlines my thoughts and is not a concrete system of rules.
Hopefully this gives a little insight into what I was thinking...
