Hi james 57!!
I think that cards have is own meaning, so all of them have the same meaning always. This if you look for isolated cards, because the encircle cards gives another point of view.
When you use a spread you know that one is for work, or past, or love.
So you use the meaning of the card related to te position.
The world is a great card whith a lot of positive things, so when it apears is saying that this part of your life is great. So it have always the same meaning. But if the world apears next to the tower, do you think the same?
If thetower comes before it means that was a bad times but know are just great.
But if you are asking if cards have ONLY one meaning my answer is a big no.
But wait for more opinions of people of the forum. they have more vocabulary then i and explains better to you.

Light, I think you've said it exactly.
No card just has one meaning, just as no two human lives will be exactly the same, and no one person will live the same day twice (apart from Bill Murray in Groundhog Day ;) - but even he found endless variations in that same day).

No.
But to stop there is cheating. If you assume a card always means that, you are blocking out OTHER new meanings it can come up with some other time. I Would say there are certain cards that ALMOST always have the same meaning in readings I do, but that isn't to say that can't change with the next reading.

Well, that kind of depends on "how" you read. There are many ways and many opinions. But for me as well, no and that is the beauty of Tarot. Each time the each card is fresh and new and contains different nuances, and can easily mean very different things...I guess you can tell I read intuitively.:-)

In a short answer no. Every card has more then one meaning and cards around the card in a spread can affect the meanings or put a new light on the card. Also when you look at the cards there is usually more then one person/animal on it for example with the nights one day you could feel like the night then next you could relate more to the horse and therefore the card takes on new meaning for you.

Never.
The cards do not mean anything alone or of themselves. Cards have to be read in a sequence or in a spread. Yes, people can do 'one-card' readings for themselves, but that card would not mean the same thing even if it came up three weeks in a row every day.
Tarot is fluid. Tarot is not written in stone.
Not only does no one card always have the same meaning, the same card drawn by two different artists would not mean the same thing or have the same meaning either! :smoker:

to make matters worse ;) : tarot cards don't mean anything, they only evoke certain responses in you.

I love that about Tarot and find that aspect of it quite beautiful: the fluidity of it. It has happened to me many times that the same card came up in readings like 3 times in a month, with very very different meanings. I find it fascinating.
And of course the last part is true as well, each deck creator adds something original to their cards. And as the images in different decks are no the same that changes the meaning.
