Hi everyone! Could somebody please clue me in on the meaning of reversals? The reason I'm confused is that sometimes I intuitively feel like giving the card its upright meaning even if it's reversed (perhaps only slightly weakened)and sometimes I feel like the reversed position matters quite a bit and that it's saying something totally different than it would have if it was upright. I just can't seem to make my mind up. Should I just decide to go one way or the other, or should I keep tuning in to my intuition? What do you do?

Hi AngelDancer,
Welcome to Aeclectic.
I think you should take a look at some of the links in this thread:

If you go to the top of the Using Tarot Cards forum there are loads of links to past threads.
I read reversals in the same way that you do by the way - go with what your intuition is telling you - a card's meaning differs depending on the question, the postition in the spread and the other cards around it. Sounds to me like you're doing ok :)
Love

Honestly, I think either would work. I just think you need to decide what you want to do and stick to it. That's what really matters. You can decide to use reversals as something very different from the upright card. Or you can decide that you are going to use your intuition to decide what it means on a case by case basis. Either way can work just as well.
Once you are clear on the method you want to use, the universe will send you the info you need in the manner that is best suited to your chosen method. If you do not chose to use reversals to show a different meaning and the universe needs to send you that message, it will send a different card instead.
In case this helps I use neither of these methods. I take reversals to mean the same thing as the upright card, but with a blockage. To me they mean that the same energy is there as in the upright card, but something is blocking it from expressing itself. If if is something you want, it then becomes your job to discover what the blockage is an remove it. If if is something you don't want, then you know it is trying to get to you and you can see how you can avoid it.
Or some people just use reversals to mean the same thing as the upright card exaclty. But it adds extra importance to the meaning. Like the card is bending over backwards (standing on it's head, to make sure you get it's full message). The universe could me making it stand out cause it is a message it particularly wants you to notice and take note of.
Hope this does not confuse things more.
But in the end, any method you choose will work for you, if you stick to the same method. The universe will know how you work and will send the message to make sense in the method you use.

The way I shuffle, I do not get any reversed cards. However, with enough experience you can tell which ones have 'reversed' interpretations (notice: I did not say 'meanings') whether they are reversed or not. Tarot is a judgement call, and usually subjective.

You're welcome and it sure is. :-)
I am sure I have learnt way more here at AT than I ever did in any book and I have a number of books. Not to mention all the great people I met here. :-)
Have a great weekend!!!!
