A nobleman stands in the courtyard of his great house. Grain is collected from the surrounding lands and stored here for times of scarcity and famine. Grain represents potentiality, fertility and the seed of life. It suggests an idea, plan or an experience that has the potential to grow. It's associated with something that may be planted for later harvest. "Against the grain" means to be in opposition to oneself or to others.

The grain silos are marked with ankhs, symbolizing life.

Surrounding the nobleman in the courtyard are cows and a wild goose. The cows suggest that which gives nurturing. They were the emblem of the goddess Hathor (see the Empress). They also symbolize love and joy.

Wild geese were thought to be mediators between earth and heaven.
