Andromeda was the daughter of Cassiopeia and Cephus. Cassiopeia had the temerity to boast that she was more beautiful than any of the Nereids. The Nereids went to their father, Poseidon, and asked for vengence, which was quick in coming. Poisedon sent a huge sea monster that devastated the country. Cepheus consulted an oracle about how to bring the crisis to an end and receive a dire message, he would have to offer his daughter as a sacrifice to the sea monster, thus Andromeda chained to the rock. Perseus was flying to the island of Seriphos, having accomplished his mission of slaying Medusa, when he saw the beautiful maiden, bound and helpless. He immediately fell in love with Andromeda. He consulted with the king and queen and asked them what had to be done to release her; he also asked that she be given him in marriage. When the sea monster came lumbering up, Perseus took out the deadly head of Medusa and held it up, turning the horrible creature into stone. What Perseus didn't know yet was the double crossing queen had already promised Andromeda's hand to Agenor (Cepheus' brother) and was not going to give Andromeda away to a perfect stranger. The queen encouraged Agenor, who arrived with an armed retinue, to kill Perseus. But Perseus turned Agenor and his army - along with the king and queen - into stone with Medusa's head, then flew off with his hard-won bride. They had many children.
