Crater is a mixing bowl in which the Greeks mixed wine and water. In the context of the Greek mythological canon, it represents a means of punishment, filled with water that Apollo's tattling crow is longing to drink but can never reach. Hydra guards the bowl, which is resting on its tail.

Another story from the Greek canon that can be connected with Crater concers a king called Demophon. During his reign, a plague struck the land, consuting the oracle, Demophon was told that a noble maiden had to be sacrificed each year for health of the city. Each year, lots were drawn to see whose child would be sacrificed, but Demophon exempted himself from the lottery. A noble called Masusius objected, and for this his own daughter was sacrificed with not lots drawn. Mastusius seemed to be reconciled with Demophon over the years, but the aggrieved Greek never forgot the king's rash sentence. One day, Mastusius invited Demophon to dinner. The king, who was busy at the moment, sent his daughters before him to the feast, and Mastusius killed them. The vengeful Mastusius served their blood mixed in a crater with wine. When Mastusius announced what he had done, he was drowned in the harbour, and the crater was thrown after him. The crater was elevated to the sky as another moral lesson, one often repeated in Greek tragedy, those who perform evil deeds will consequently suffer evil.
