Forest Folklore - The Devil

It is easy to just think of this as in the terms of burning in hell, and hell fires, but I tend to see this as a bit more than that.

I know it is a man, but he has the legs of a goat, although you can't see the feet, but that is the typical symbolism of the Devil. Also he has bat wings. And the horns look like they are bull (as in cattle, cows) horns.

Goat - lechery, lust and obviously the devil.

Bat - blindness, an attribute to nighty, and as the Devil's bird, associated with black magic and witchcraft. In contrast, the bat also signifies vision, hope and good luck.

Bull - the commonest symbol of sexual potency. Also brute force. In ancient Egypt, and elsewhere, a symbol of power, fertility and strength.

Fire can be destructive, but it can also be therapeutic. It can burn away the old, which would make way for the growth of something new.

The whip conjures up images of bondage, you know, that sort of thing. But it is something that is used on slaves, and even animals, to get them to do what you want them to do, to spur them into action so to speak, and it can also be used as a form of punishment or discipline. Controlling someone, so you have the power over them, to make them submissive.

The man and woman are afraid of the devil, the devil has the power over them, they are cowering, they seem to be in a submissive position. The man and woman are chained, together (?)
