Runes are a set of symbols, usually grouped into 3 sets of eight, used in various areas of Northern Europe. One of my favorite sites is http://www.tarahill.com/runes/ Here's another: http://www.runemaker.com/futhark/reading.shtml This site shows some of the variations in symbol sets: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/runic.htm Some people learn about them through New Age style authors.
