When I was researching the King one time it was uncovered that he marked a boundary between this world and the land of Fey. The Victorians were fascinated with the Occult and supernatural so it is hardly surprising that fairies feature in the deck. They are also representative of the element air.

I also wonder, since the Queen is supposedly the widow, who then is the King? Is he representative of a second husband. If we associate him with legality does this also include wills, signatories, legacy, step relations and divorce. Is he a significator of a divorced man and all that entails and also step husbands, remarriage and all that jazz.

He comes up a lot in my readings to represent a man who has made up his mind and won't be budged. The reasons for the judgement may be deeply emotional but he won't let you see the reasons or even justify his decision. If this man comes up to represent an ex, there won't be a reconciliation. Like I said above, he may also be a divorced man as divorce is obviously irreconcilable.

I like the Fey take on this card: http://www.masquedman.com/readings/cards/fey/fyskg.jpg

You can see his battle scars, his armour, determination and focus as well as pain.

In the RWS: http://www.instantoracle.com/images/large/rw_63.jpg

His passion is cloaked he wears a red lined cloak and has a red shoe to signify the heart. He also has a cherub on his crown for love. If you look at the back of his throne, there is a fairy scene and since his throne is never ending, I see it as a boundary or door that he is prepared to defend. So he has limits or a threshold you will not be allowed to pass.

He is a passionate person but his passion is not all intellect like the Knight for example. His decision making is born of experience and maturity. He may have experienced suffering and has learned valuable lessons or hard truths. The egg shaped cloud and butterfly could be interpreted as symbols of eternal truths.

His emotions are balanced with intellect and he will choose logic over the heart. He is a decision made or a mind made up. He will act accordingly.

Interesting! Sometimes we're more surprised by how much people are like us though, than by how different they are. Maybe whomever you were reading about shares your approach to things (at the moment anyway).

It's been questioned why this King looks so female in appearance as he seems to have large hips and feminine features. If the Queen is indeed the widow, then maybe she is also the King? That may be why she has her hair covered.

For me, women as well as men can be any of the courts. They are archetypes and not actual people. So yes, I don't see why you can't be the King. Weaknesses are strengths depending on perspective and context. In some situations, head over heart is a strength.

btw Knight/Queen/King all feature butterflies.

I usually come up as the QoS, being a VIrgo and all, and sometimes the Q of pents. And I do feel she describes me well. glad to know butterflies are on all three, just reaffirms that the Queen or King as I progress are truly my significators. Just need to learn how to be queen of cups....
