Available Tarot Decks for a Web Tarot Application?
Hi I'm very new on this forum. I want to learn more about the possibilities to use some nice Tarot Deck's in a Web Tarot Application. Is anyone interested to provide his own nice-looking tarot arts into such project or have someone experiences with using professional tarot decks in such projects? What is the correct procedure to achieve this? Cheers |

Hi Cardbus, Welcome to the forum!. I don't have any experience with this, but I would imagine that you could contact some of the major publishing companies like Llewellyn http://www.llewellyn.com/about/contact_us.php or US Games http://www.usgamesinc.com/help.php?s...us&mode=update and ask them what the process involves? They may be able to guide you. Many people reproduce well-known decks in their own creative projects (books for example). It seems likely that the process would start with getting permission from the owner of the copyright? Hope that helps in some way. Best Wishes to you! P.S. not sure what the rules are about posting links. Hope it's okay. __________________ "No joy can equal the joy of serving others." ~Sai Baba~ |

Hi cardbus, I really don't have any specific knowledge on the whole process. I'm guessing it would be hard to find "royalty free" decks for use in a commercial project. From what i've read, some deck creators spend years and years and years building the artwork, and symbolism for their specific systems. This can involve painting/ repainting/ drawing each and every card and that's just a portion of the project... The interpretations would then undoubtedly have to be written for each card. If you're talking about a 78 card deck, that's an incredible amount of time and effort involved. I can't imagine many people willing to donate that kind of project to someone else for monetary gain and not expecting to be compensated in some way for their intellectual property. I've seen apps with very simple hand-drawn graphics, and others that use photos to represent the various cards. See these examples: http://www.pcworld.com/appguide/app....0&expand=false http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/e-tar...316191444?mt=8 My favourite example is this one: http://thetarotroom.com/tarot-decks-...rot-version-1/ So there's lots of room for creativity! Maybe you could consider coming up with your own images? Hope this helps. Again, I have no working knowledge of creating apps or writing professionally, but I admire your ambition! Best of luck to you. __________________ "No joy can equal the joy of serving others." ~Sai Baba~ |

Hi Scibility It's clear for me that no one will give such nice work for free. For me it is clear to share percents of revenue to use this arts. Thanks Remo |

Dover USUALLY says not more than 10 images from any one book. All their books are royalty free - but with that proviso. I'd ask them, in your place, but this book is no exception - I have it in front of me at this moment. No more than 10 in any one project. I am not aware of ANY decks that are totally free for on line use. You will need to contact a publisher and ask. You can't assume you can use someone else's work for nothing. __________________ ~ ~ I probably shouldn't be here.
