My good friend who is a "kitchen witch" type smudges with sage or sweetgrass quite regularly and has never set off the smoke alarm. Just don't be silly and stand under the detector for a long period of time while you're holding it.

She also swears by salt. Black salt is best, but can be expensive. When I had a rental apartment, I wanted to "ward" the doors and windows without annoying the landlords, so I would fill jars with coarse sea salt and put them on either side of all the thresholds. She also scatters pennies on the floor, because copper is good for protection against bad energy. I also remember her telling me to keep a feather under the doormat to keep negativity from coming in.

Another "safe" way to cleanse is to add herbs to a pot of boiling water and let the steam/scent fill the room.

This is gonna sound odd, but then I AM odd
I make up a sea salt/water mix, dip a broom in it, and "sweep" counter-clockwise. Then I use Rosemary & lavender essential oils mixed in water and "sweep" clock-wise. I do this even over carpeting....just not too much water...LOL
I like incense, but, like you said, the smudging/burning of herbs sets off alarms.
sea salt and water I've heard is great for cleansing energy and I love rosemary and lavender oils. you can also put some rosemary into a pot of water and boil it to get the delightful aroma to spread around as well. or one of those oil burners. I always have fresh rosemary in pots in the house, so I just snip a bit off and use it as needed.

you don't sound odd at all! you sound very normal. at least, probably among all of us here!

Rosemary and Lavender are also beautiful... (Yay Stormy )... I often rub lavender leaves right into my skin... beautiful... and some of the scented geraniums... (oh, pelargoniums), especially the Rose scented geranium... Yum!

and Sage!!! Fresh sage.... lovely!!!
I also love the orange scents and lemon too, that citrusy smell is delightful!

never heard of black salt and now I know why I often see pennies scattered over the floor in some places---or at least perhaps I know why. that always drives me nuts though. but, didn't realize copper was a protection against bad energy! thanks NT.

a good thread here. some great ideas to incorporate into my spring cleaning this year.

I do make my own wood polish which some will probably be aghast at. I put a small amount of Mr. Clean lemon cleaning solution into a spray bottle, diluted with water. Spray a bit onto a cleaning cloth and wipe down all the wood furniture and just generally use it to collect dust. you do have to immediately dry it off with a dry cloth too--but oh it cleans so well and is good for the wood furniture. I also wipe up our pergo wood floors with the same mix. not only does it clean well and I swear helps to keep the dust away longer as a result, but it also smells great, and perhaps now I see it also helps to clean the energy in the home!
