Conscious picks

I started exploring an idea a while ago and finally got around to blogging about it yesterday. I was wondering what others thought.

Basically, the idea entails focusing on an issue, going through the deck and selecting from it all the cards that speak to you about it or relate to it. Take all of those relevant cards out of the deck and spread them out. Those cards are the description of what you consciously think and feel and they outline the situation itself as you know it. What you're left with are the cards that you don't feel have such a strong connection to it. Shuffle those cards and then draw some at random to lay against the ones you picked consciously. What do these new, random cards confirm or deny about your perspective? Do they give you a fresh way of looking at things?

You can do it for a querent as well, by selecting the conscious picks to describe the story they've told you.

Here are some things to consciously select appropriate cards for:

- Select a card to represent your partner at the moment and then one to represent you
- Select a card to show how you currently feel about your life/the issue at hand
- Select cards to tell the story of a conflict or difficult situation according to the perspectives of everyone involved
- Select a card to describe what you think you ought to do about something

Once you've chosen the cards you think describe the issue most accurately, shuffle and draw from the rest of the deck in the usual way for random cards to contrast them with.

I'm not certain if anyone's particularly interested in this subject but I just felt compelled to update because I'm currently reading Messages From the Archetypes by Toni Gilbert and she has actually mentioned something similar to what I've devised.

She calls it the 'linear' technique. She asks querents to go through the deck face up and place the cards into two piles - one pile of the cards they're attracted to and one for those they instinctively don't like. She then discards the pile that the querent doesn't like and asks them to go through the ones they like and select five that they really prefer. She does the reading based on these conscious picks.

Thumbs up

Absolutely, since everyone here has decks. So, as long as the exchange is done using a deck that both participants can read, it would work. You'd just post the five cards you're consciously the most attracted to at the moment and the interpretation would be given.

The only downside with using the linear technique for an experienced reader is that, unlike people who don't read Tarot, they have a deep understanding of the meanings of the cards and so *could* select cards that they believe will give them the most satisfactory outcome. But one thing I've learned from posting on Aeclectic Tarot is that interpretations of cards and spreads vary massively so it would still be an interesting experiment and could bring up things the querent hadn't considered.
