Thanks, for the feedback ya'll. I really appreciate it. I usually read on my bed at night.. or on my desktop at work before office hours start. I haven't used a special cloth, and was curious to see if using one made a big difference, or if it was just a matter of promoting focus. I may have to give it a try, see if it helps me to focus. I have a problem with ADD, and focusing can be something of a problem for me. HB |

What would be ultra-cool would be a piano scarf or a Spanish shawl - but all that long fringe would get in the way! __________________ I don't lead the parade - I AM THE PARADE! This is not rocket surgery, ya know! Bury the past - and move on to a new tomorrow. |

I usually don't bother with a cloth but I have some. One of them is for my Housewives Tarot and is very dear to me for sentimental reasons. AJ made it for me along with a bag for the deck, all made of an appropriate vintage fabric. A second one is made like a crazy quilt. AJ made it for me and then I embroidered and beaded it and edged it with wide crochet-looking lace. Needless to say, it's beautiful. (Mental note to post a photo of it if I ever find it in unpacking.) But I don't ever use that one because it's too pretty. Go figure. ![]() Other than that, I don't really use a spread cloth. I would if I wanted to keep the deck clean on a crummy-looking surface, like in a restaurant or something, but I mostly just forget to take one along and the number of times I go to a restaurant in a year would fit on the head of a pin. I carry a deck in my bag and that's about the extent of how I prepare to go anywhere. __________________ Check out the A. Nonny Mouse Thread! I am a bit of a slob and tend to spill tea and crumbles a lot so my mom knitted me a spread-cloth. But it has no esoteric meaning, just practical and it is pretty. http://saidenne.files.wordpress.com/...enochian29.jpg __________________ To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong. When reading on a hard flat surface, sometimes it's hard to pick the cards up and you have to slide the card off the edge of the table, that can scratch the cards if there are some bits of dirt around. Having a reading cloth changes this, it makes reading a bit more convenient .

Grizz - is the reading cloth for your Housewives Tarot a red-checked tablecloth by any chance?

If I read on my altar there's a black, white or purple cloth on it at all times. But most of the time I read at the kitchen table with no cloth. As long as the surface is clean, I am good. But when I carry the cards any where, they're wrapped in a black silk draw string bag. |

Cloths are more for practical reasons for me. They don't really enhance the reading other than the right cloth making the cards artwork pop out a bit better. I buy bandannas from the craft store. They're like $2, nice sized, and already hemmed so I don't worry about them fraying. I mostly use them on tables to keep my cards from getting dirty. __________________ "This is the limit of my limits: here it is. Sometimes they make a deck look prettier
If there are colors you want to brighten, as the deck might be light and pastel, the backdrop may make some colors 'pop.' Sometimes a somewhat 'homey primal' or borderless deck like the Xulton suddenly looks mysteriously striking and tropically luscious if there's a backdrop that enhances the bright colors. That is a very green deck. I didn't like the plain sameness of red on yellow for the Sharman Caselli deck for all the wands, but having a backdrop that can mitigate all that yellow that might hurt the eyes on a bright day...that was just a matter of speaking, as the yellow doesn't really hurt the eyes. It was just too much same-same to me. Wrapping in an unused scarf, bandana, cloth scrap is sometimes good if the deck is older and you want some cushioning. On hot, sticky days, sometimes silky or cotton with colorfast dyes help me not worry about the cards ruining older books or paper with sticky laminate...or helps me not worry about older decks that are bumped around with keys and other necessary objects that I need to have handy. So it's not a necessity, just a choice. __________________ Still, cerulean surges... where, as sunset lingers Eve with golden fingers... Hector A. Stuart South Sea Dreamer, 1886 |
