Wheel of Fortune

The Wheel of Fortune

This typeface is 3D – solidly where you are at the moment – but there is lots of substance behind the glowing edges, and also where the sides of the letters are not even visible, and I wonder if, wherever we are on the wheel, there is more to explore before saying resignedly, “That’s life.” Maybe “where we are” (the bit of life we have at the moment) has more to it than meets the eye.

Linked to this idea is this thought: the rest of the wheel doesn’t fit in the frame here – if you drew it, it would go off the card. This shows me that we mostly only ever focus on the bit we’re on at the moment, putting it in our frame of view and thinking that’s that’s the only bit of life allotted to us. Forgetting the “wheel” aspect, because we can’t see it at the minute.

I notice too that the letters are all ones that squarely take up their space. Specifically, no “I”s. Sometimes we can think there is no room for “I” in the rotating scheme of things. But – if you look carefully, you can read the word HEFT vertically from outer to inner arc – and I immediately realise that in some senses I really can heft the wheel round a bit by my attitude and have some effect on what fate has served up. Maybe swing the wheel a little in my favour? Bring another bit of life into view in my frame?

Finally, as I look, I see that the word fortune is in a smaller font size. It’s one of those words that has taken on a positive meaning (a bit like “I’ve got a heart condition” is always a negative statement even though we all have one!) so fortune is often associated with “being fortunate” and the good fortune in our lives is given less space for recognition. But have another look. This word is nearer the centre of things (the invisible centre that is not marked on this card) – maybe we have to look inwards to the hidden/unmarked places to find that fortune in everything.

Just some thoughts! Let me know what you think?

Hello, is The Hierophant still waiting for a student (ha!)? We've never got on, he & I, but I can see some great ways in which that font expresses his qualities, if no one else has claimed him?

I notice there is one more card that is wanting a reader. Thank you for opening my eyes to this deck. May I take The Chariot? I think it has been waiting for me...

I wish I could find out which font this is. How did you do that, *Cat?

The letters remind me something of a sports team or a movie title— or the title of a movie about a sports team. The way the verticals trail their horizontals makes me think of speed. The lettering takes up the entire width of the card, moving the eye swiftly from one side to the other. The words are placed high on the card, but not too high. They are balanced: any higher and they might topple over, any lower and they would be less powerful. The capital letters are the staunch cockiness of some square football player: curved for aerodynamics, solid & strong, these letters are going somewhere.

I fell asleep last night thinking about this exercise. I like to think about creative things while falling asleep. I can let go of any outcome and an idea turns into a lucid dream. And in my semi-lucid state—

THE CHARIOT

I stood there in the darkness waiting and—
The Chariot! I never thought I’d get a ride—
and then up pulled some nondescript
compact sedan— four doors and
THE CHARIOT emblazoned on the side—
the letters spoke of triumph—
and of speed— and tho
the car itself was nothing much to see
I stepped inside.

The driver was a man
of any age or none—
his face— I can’t recall—
but then— his eyes—
two disks that spun like flaming wheels—
I’d hailed a taxicab and caught
some new-born sun god as my guide.

He drove fast— swerved through traffic—
turned tight corners— ignored signs and
all the while never moved
his hypnotizing eyes from mine.
I do not know how long he drove.
I cannot tell you where we went.
I could not look outside the car.
I only saw inside— inside—
the speed— the noise— the flashing lights
flew by— flew by— flew by.

At once he stopped— and there I stood
exactly where I’d been. The car was gone.
The night was dark. I cannot tell you
where I’d gone. I cannot tell you what I’d seen—
but one time— when I stood in darkness—
THE CHARIOT! It stopped—
and took me for a ride—

Chariot Typeface image for Barefoot Fool

Great!
And a lovely poem too. How nice that the muse falls at bedtime

I've attached the image so others can see it - the typeface used is Drive Thru NF, created in 2000 by Nick's Fonts. You get this info from the PDF, near the end.

The Hierophant

This is the first Hierophant I've had a positive response to, I'm glad I spotted this thread. Thanks Ellie!

The font here has many layers, there is always more than one line for each letter's stroke. Like the different layers of reality and our understanding of them - the mystic lessons (above and below) that the Hierophant is prepared to show us.

When I look at the individual letters I see spiders, swords, birds and moons; serpentine shapes moving and hiding behind the letters. There isn't one, fixed meaning for each, and your own unconscious will be the factor that chooses which you first see.

I get the idea of the Hierophant as a high priest/shaman/ wise man kind of teacher, one who could lead me through the hidden/sacred/wild/divine because of his connections to them and the knowledge he already has (vs the knowledge I seek/need). This is more attractive to me than the stern, patriarchal Heirophant I tend to see and rebel against when he turns up in my usual (Aquarian) deck. While the High Priestess can lift a veil, this Hierophant could help me to figure out what I find behind it.

The sword I see in the T could also be a cross, and reminds me of King Arthur/Merlin/the Grail. The spider/bat shapes I see in the H make me think of cartoon witches, of dark caves & nature. Webs spun, invisible sonar guiding. More than meets the eye - more than sanitised city society can offer.

The position of the font again reminds me of 'above and below' - there is space left for learning and knowledge above and beyond what the Hierophant offers. He's not positioned as the end of the road, but in a place where the experience and knowledge required to get where he is can then lead to further knowledge in the space that opens up beyond him.

The font is at the same height as the Emperor, one of seniority and authority, but doesn't feel the need to fill all the available space and embolden itself. The layers and depth are shown within the letters, and don't need to be enlarged or to shout.

Hierophant typeface image for realramona

I love being made to see things I might have missed – though I might have preferred not to see the spider!! Enjoyed your interpretation.

I've attached the image for others to inspect the bats etc.

Thanks for your input. You'll never see the Hierophant in the same way again

Any chance of you making it to the Oxford meet-up (see another thread)? I'm going to be new to it myself this year. You'd be welcome.
