Sometimes, if you are having trouble determining if you should be reading the more shadow sides of the cards' energies or not, you may also have to consider what is the most reasonable way to look at the cards. Common sense may point to the need to see the cards in their more negative light in this case because you know, as reader, that the couple has been separated for a year without any contact at all. Normally, if a man still has any substantial romantic feelings for an ex, it would be reasonable to think he may have contacted her before now to try for a reconciliation.

Of course, your seeker would like to think he still has those kinds of feelings for her (or she probably wouldn't be asking), and you would like to be able to tell her that the cards say he does; however, if he really doesn't, it doesn't serve her well to give her false hope, either.

So, that is just a point to think about when doing readings like this one, as well--which may or may not fit here (and is where your intuition has to come into it.) Maybe you could get a better or wider answer if you posted the whole reading in Your Readings, though. Good luck to your friend in this situation--however it turns out!

A minor detail, re: post #5...

The cardinal signs in astrology are the opposing pairs Cancer/Capricorn and Aries/Libra.

Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are the air signs.

Golden Dawn (?) attributions for Kings are Air. So King Cups is Air of Water, which make foggy conditions and hard to see, quite easy to lose your bearings and get lost... as well as reducing the danger of wild fires breaking out and getting fires under control. But Air/Water would also be head over heart... this King won't follow his heart unless his mind decides it's a good idea to.

But back to the ill dignified question about the King Cups... The Emperor is stronger because it is a Major, Fire is not friendly to Water and neutralizes it. Water also has this unfriendly habit of putting fires out. I think the Fire/Water combination makes both ill dignified, so wouldn't read them as a 'positive' combo at all.

If Temperance did come up, it would be to brew a cup of tea and think it over. It could be a tempest in a teapot.

Wales : Temperence is the mixing of fire and water.. is it not?
It did come up like i had suspected it would...
I could see that.

Starry : thank you.. i agree . I kinda see it now as Her ex may be thinking it over ... But is probably a lost cause i think..trying to be a good positive friend while being her tarot reader at the same time is tough .

The hardest part of reading tarot is reading it how it is, rather than what you hope it is, especially when you want someone to be happy, including yourself. I am guilty of such, where it looked like it meant wonderful things, using the positive spin just a wee bit and turned out quite the opposite.

King Cups/Emperor have never proven to be very good for relationships, unless you like to be in emotionally remote and controlling ones.
