I like the Thunder Bay and have several copies, in case something bad happens to the one I use, or I want to give a TdM as a gift. And because of the price, it certainly meets the "casual, bumming around with, don't weep if lost or damaged" criteria. But there are certain charms the Burdel deck has that a Conver like the TB doesn't offer: hilted swords (and the funky nine of swords that so often goes with that); fleurs de lys on the coins; the chain links and extra vegetation on the Ace of Staves; the kid that looks like he's wearing a necktie in The Sun; the left-handed Ace of Swords; and the Ace of Cups that looks like an old-fashioned fire screen more than anything else, certainly more than it looks like a cup.

Of course some folks could find any or all of those items annoying, but for some of us, they just feel like home.

Thanks for reminding me of this site! I only wish sites like this included pictures of the tuck boxes as that would make things much easier.

I have a couple dozen or so different TdM decks, but not a single Burdel, so I am definitely looking for a Burdel deck. I didn't even notice this glaring omission in my collection until I stumbled across an image of 'The Sun' card that looked unfamiliar to me. Turns out it was the Burdel Sun card.

One of my all time favorite decks.
It's very well drawn, and the engraving quality is particularly fine.

The re-drawn versions do very little for me.
Thanks for posting the photos.

Is there a facsimile of this available, or are you talking about about authentic cards from 1751?

Hello garmonbozia.

Ya, that's an 18th century original in the photos.

I posted the photos in order to illustrate the gap between an actual Claude Burdel tarot, and what Lo Scarabeo has produced in his name.

As he stated earlier, Yves Le Marseillais is planning to produce a facsimile version in the near future.
I expect it will likely be somewhat more faithful to the original.

I would go with a Grimaud for this style of TDM deck and if I wanted a more colourful version I would go with a Fournier. I love Lo Scarabeo, but not for 'Marseille' decks.

I'm with Freddie. Being a purist about different versions of the historical decks may be a required stance for historians, but I'm happy using the "fake" Conver decks, such as Grimaud or CBD. I have never especially liked the "fake" Burdel decks, nor do I care much for the scans I have seen of what is assumed to be the original. I gave away my "fake" LoS Burdel.

What do you mean by "...what is assumed to be the original...." ???

My posts have nothing to do with "being a purist", or what "stance" is required of "historians", or even what is "fake".

Since the subject of this discussion is the various Burdel decks, I thought it would be useful to see what Claude Burdel himself put his name on, and how it compares side-by-side with a recent commercially published copy of his deck.
I actually have the old deck, so I took the time to shoot some photos so everyone who's interested can see for themselves what we're actually talking about, and draw their own conclusions.

As I said earlier, I like the original a lot better.

I think we may be mixing up N. Conver decks with C. Burdel decks.

Indeed. The Thunder Bay got in here somewhere and it is certainly a Conver, NOT a Burdel....
