yeah. does sound pendulum-ish. i did something similar with my friend when she found out she was pregnant, but it was only to determine the gender of the baby she was having. we used her necklace and pendant for it and it indicated "girl" for her, which is what she ended up having.
i think i have heard of using needle and thread before, think it was really popular her with my parents' generation. think "needle and thread" is a little more socially acceptable than a "real" pendulum

Well my friend said that using a light weighted necklace with a pendant or a ring would work too XD I'm not quite sure when it became popular because it's all quite new to me XD
