Decline in numbers

In a 7 card relationship spread, the last four cards were all the same suit and declined in number, a court card, a 5, a 4 and a 1.

How would you interpret the decrease in energy?

Since aces are beginnings, would you say that the relationship regressed and each one wants to go their own way, or a desire for a new beginning?

Interestingly, when the Minor Arcana are placed on the Tree of Life, the lower-numbered cards are more energetic and "pristine" than the higher ones, since they are elevated on the Tree and closer to the source or "root" of the elemental power that resides in the Aces, which sit at the top. Conversely, the higher-numbered cards are closer to being "fixed" in mundane circumstances, and thus exhibit a near-exhaustion of the original manifesting impulse of their suit. Have you considered that, in this spread, a "recapturing" or "return to the source" of the energy driving the relationship could be a possibility? If the relationship has become complicated, this might indicate a need to return to a simpler state, along the lines shown by the dominant suit. If accomplished, this certainly could mean a second chance or new beginning.

I am hoping it is towards a new beginning. To me since the fives and fours are more depressing, I felt that their migration towards the ace actually was a new start that a hurdle had been overcome and that this was kind of a "clean slate, let's start over" kind of thing.

Since these are depressing to you, am betting they were cups. Perhaps the numbers are pointing to the base of what ever is going on, what created a problem, which leads you open to figuring out how to go from there and deal with it. In a way, creating a new beginning, a fresh start or resurgence of the energy you need to turn things around. So much of problems and solutions to them depend on where you choose to focus and the attitude you perceive them with.

I think it would all depend on the spread you are using. Does each position of the spread answer a different question? If so there would be less importance of the number combination. For me in general: A decline in numbers to me would indicate more possibilities, if number were moving upward it would be coming to some kind of conclusion (kind of... things are more set, little room for movement) .

It was spread that had no positions and the numbers declined from left to right. I can see your point where if they were ascending it might me that the situation was unfolding and reaching a conclusion. My first thought when I saw the cards was a new start, but then I may just be hopeful.....
