Art and Lies spread (2-6)

“There is no such thing as autobiography; there is only art and lies.” —Jeanette Winterson

#1 The Art
#2 The Lies

I think it’s probably best to keep this vague so people can find more in the cards. But for those that are stuck:

“The Art” could be where the beauty lies in your life, what you’ve created, your passion…

“The Lies” could be what you keep hidden, what you refuse to acknowledge, in what ways you pretend to be something else, feelings of desolation and loss…

For further clarification, draw:

#3: Handel: Ways in which you’ve lost control (of your life, of your composure…) or become disillusioned. Regrets.
#4: Picasso: Obstacles you face. What you’ve created despite hardship.
#5: Sappho: How you communicate with the world. The parts of yourself that transcend time and place.
#6: Doll Sneerpiece: What you offer to others. What others take from you.

Layout:

----1--2----

3--4---5--6

[work in progress, feedback welcome]

Interesting spread. Seems it would be very good for many types of self exploration. The first two spots are pretty easy to understand. The next 3 took me a little bit of searching to fully understand as I knew little about the people whose names you used for position names. And I couldn't find the last name ... I'm guessing that you made up "Doll Sneerpiece"? You did explain the positional meanings quite well though. But I'm thinking that, perhaps, a brief explanation of why you chose each of those people to represent those positions might be helpful in the user making better use of the spread.

Thanks for the feedback, Trogon! Somehow I managed to forget to make it clear that Art & Lies is a book. So, while Handel, Picasso, and Sappho are all real people, they are also characters in the book (as is Doll Sneerpiece). And as the book is very postmodern and non-linear all of them are simultaneously their fictional and non-fictional selves...So for my spread, I was using the characters' main storylines and attributes for inspiration, basically.

I highly recommend you read the book, it's one of my favorites. Here's a link with a little background: http://www.jeanettewinterson.com/pag....asp?PageID=12

Sounds interesting. I would definitely give a little more background on each of these characters as, it would appear from Ms. Winterson's own description, with the exception of Sappho, the names don't match up with who I was thinking at all! It would take a bit of time, but a few sentences about each would, I think, help the person who hasn't read the book, to further understand the positional meanings.
