So taking cards out makes it a incomplete tarot deck, and like a car missing a spark plug,or a oven with one functional element it is a inefficient tarot deck... not worth using if you have a complete one.

I do get that, TCO and totally agree

I was talking about for those under say 10 whose parents are conservative and I wasn't saying I WOULD do that, but looking at options where I can still read at a conservative HAlloween venue while using all cards. To me it is NOT reading tarot if cards are missing. But some others brought up decks where some of the cards are just renamed (again not my preference, but would be better than leaving them out). For those who have never had a reading and have preconceived notions of it being kind of scary, I don't want to throw them into the deep end of the pool. I'm hoping this can be kind of a debut for me here, a chance to educate re tarot and also get possible future querents. This will be going off track for me. I think you know me well enough to know I like traditionally named cards and wouldn't want to veer off not using some of them. But sometimes one must think of compromises in order to advance one's agenda (mine is education and possibly having some querents to read for!) and provide the easiest entry in tarot as possible. For me, part of reading tarot is to know your audience. You've been reading a long time, TCO, so I think you get where I'm coming from with this one.

Just making sure to touch base in both threads....

In the Inner Child Tarot, Death and the Devil, renamed as Sleeping Beauty and The Big Bad Wolf, happily fit your criteria for those two cards.

BTW, I do love this deck, just for its own beauty and the skill with which these stories have been integrated with the tarot.

Thanks again rhoswen!

You have solved my dilemma beautifully! No cards left out and something that should appeal to most everyone!

Love Tarotbear's suggestion. *chuckle*

I've serious issues with reading for children. Simply put, without offense, most kids haven't the proper mental facilities, self awareness, and maturity chew through what cards can indicate. Think about how many adults NEVER acquire these attributes! More importantly? Part of being a kid, part of living life, is not knowing what tomorrow brings. The world's still shiny and it feels like every day is a new chance- even when you're stuck in a **** home, a poor environment, whatever. I wouldn't want to impact that.

16 w/ parental consent, 17 and up no problem.

Leave cards out? There may have been a time I would have considered it but I can't say I would now.

If it was a "You-must-read-for-10-yr-old-or-die" case? I'd possibly take my Shadowscapes or Galasso's Crystal Visions. I've no intent on scaring the bejesus out of a tiny kid.

I hear you, Kosjitov!

If this were not a Halloween venue, with parents there, would I even consider reading for younger than say young teen, no way. But for an event where families will be roaming around, I have to be prepared that a parent may think it ok for a young one to get a reading to see the pictures and be prepared for that. They will be there and my options would be to decline and then perhaps confirm the fears of some regarding tarot as scary. I would obviously do a very brief and talk on a level a child could understand (I doubt i would get any parents allowing a child under say 8-10 to get a reading) and it would mostly be them looking at pix (like Inner Child) and helping them draw their own conclusions and keeping more about the pix than what I would call a reading. But I can so see if a child is with a parent or an older sibling gets a reading, they may want their own "reading" :-). And even if it's just to look a some pix in the deck, I have to be prepared for that.

Good luck! I just wouldn't do it, but that's just my thing- I *do* understand your position and I hope all goes well for you though!

I wouldn't leave any cards out, but if I were reading for young kids, I would use a kid appropriate deck.

Are you familiar with the Vision Quest deck? It's a beautiful Native American style deck with "Transformation" instead of Death and "Torment" instead of the Dev. I love reading with this deck!! It's absolutely beautiful and I find that people really like it too. It's one of my favorite tarot decks. http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/vision-quest/ I didn't peek at your collection so don't know if you have it but if you don't....I HIGHLY recommend it.

This is a possible scenario for many, me possibly included. The time of the year when some things are more accepted is coming up quickly. On one hand, part of me thinks it's a compromise or the other hand, that it's an easy way to show people who have never seen a deck of cards it's not so scary. Like an easy introduction.

Thoughts? Any one faced this situation or one similar?
yes, i would leave cards out! And I would stress that the reading is for "entertainment value" only. which works beautifully because if i were reading for kids, I'd stress that anyway
