Psychoanalysis and Tarot
Hi all, I'm new to tarot and the forums. Well, relatively new to the tarot -- I used to play with a RWS deck when I was a teenager, but I'm trying to approach the cards more seriously now, many years later. I browsed through some cards in a new age shop and was drawn in by the Golden Tarot of Klimt -- decided to pick that as my "starter" deck. I'm planning to work with it exclusively, at least for a while. The cards are absolutely gorgeous and seem to really "work" for me -- unlike when I used RWS, interpretations come to me naturally with this deck, and I'm very happy with the readings I've given friends. I'm also a student of Freud and psychoanalysis, so it's very fitting to use the artwork of a Viennese painter, especially given his focus on sexuality/eroticism. I'd like to look further into how Freudian analysis resonates with the tarot in general. So much has been written about Jung and tarot archetypes, but I think there's plenty to be said relating to Freud's ideas on the unconscious, infantile sexuality, repression, transference, sublimation, etc. How do the tarot help us to understand the forces of the Id and Superego? How can the "rationalist" and somewhat anti-supernatural tools of analysis lend some grounding to the mysticism of the tarot? (I do not believe the two are mutually exclusive.) How does the relationship between the reader/querent mimic, and differ from, an analytic relationship? I've been reading 78 Degrees of Wisdom and think there's tons of (unacknowledged) psychoanalytic material there. Any other recommendations/thoughts on this subject are much appreciated .Cheers, Jordan Last edited by littleozzyman; 23-08-2012 at 13:36. |

Welcome Jordan :)
Hello Jordan and welcome. I'm pretty new here but I'm also a psych. Buff and I also can't help but read the cards from a psychoanalytic perspective. I don't know the deck you're speaking of but I'm going to check it out now. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and that I'm glad you're here. I hope to read more of your posts and reading and possibly exchange readings with you in the future

Welcome!
Hi littleozzyman :-) I also have a big interest in this concept, and i've recently stumbled on a really terrific podcast that deals heavily on exploring these ideas. You might like it (if you're into podcasts). ~link removed by moderator~ Hope this is helpful! __________________ "No joy can equal the joy of serving others." ~Sai Baba~ Last edited by Hemera; 24-08-2012 at 16:40. |

Hi littleozzyman. Welcome. It would be good if you open a thread on this separate from the introductions so that we can all pitch in to the discussions. Cherrio! |
