I got caught out once in the early 90's. Back then I was relatively new to the Hebrew alphabet and got very confused when an author rendered the letter Beth as Veth. Of course every time I saw the letter "V" I mistakenly assumed it was a Vav. When I finally figured it out I thought "vastard!"

That's actually a surprising mistake (not yours, the author's). It goes against every grammatical rule there is (beit, gimel, daled, kaf, pe, taf are almost always hard when they are the first letter), plus the very name, which of course means house. For heavens's sake (literally!), Genesis begins with it. With the numerous edits any book goes through, I'm surprised something as simple, or as basic, as that could make it all the way to a finished publication.

It really is on par with vastard

What book was it?

It was so long ago I can't remember the title. I borrowed it from a friend, read a chapter and a bit, skimmed the rest, got bored and then gave it back. I can recall the cover design. A blue checker pattern with a circle of red Hebrew letters.

I also remember that the book was split into two parts. The second half was written by a different author who I believe used the Ashkenazi(?) dialect because words like Kether and Daath were spelt Kesser and Daas.

Getting back on topic...

The dictionary definition of Chaste.
Quote:
Chaste

adjective, chast·er, chast·est.

1. refraining from sexual intercourse that is regarded as contrary to morality or religion; virtuous.
2. virgin.
3. not engaging in sexual relations; celibate.
4. free from obscenity; decent: chaste conversation.
5. undefiled or stainless: chaste, white snow.

Origin: Latin castus - clean, pure.
Quote:
Virtue:- moral excellence, goodness, righteousness.

also Chastity, especially in a woman.
Putting all this together a chaste woman is a virtuous woman by the fact that she is either a virgin, is celibate, or only has sex within the strict confines of marriage. Such a woman is considered clean, decent, and pure. But what about a woman who falls outside of this definition? Is she lacking virtue, unclean, indecent, and dirty? To most sane minds the obvious answer is no. Unfortunately it's not that simple. Like a lot of throw-back attitudes from the past it hasn't gone away, it's just gone under ground and is a little less visible and less socially acceptable than it used to be. But old habits die hard.

In my opinion the current verse is aimed squarely against this whole negative attitude and it's associated religious dogmas and icons. They are to be torn upon wheels and despised.

Thanks, you both have been very helpful. I've wondered about those dots, closrapexa.
