Books on Reading with TdM?
Are there any books that you would recommend for the help in reading/interpreting the TdM style decks? I just ordered the Universal Marseille Tarot Kit by Lo Scarabeo, and I purchased the kit solely for the inclusion of a book as I can't seem to find any other! I'm currently working my way through The Tarot: History, Symbolism and Divination by Robert M. Place (and curse it for peaking my interest in historical Tarots!) and have Mystical Origins of the Tarot: From Ancient Roots to Modern Usage by Paul Huson in my cart at Amazon, for reference. Are there any in-print books on TdM in English that I'm just not seeing? ...Everything appears to be in French, which I have not used in YEARS. Though, this is making me want to brush up on my French skills. lol! ETA: Have you read/would you recommend...? - The Magical World of the Tarot: Fourfold Mirror of the Universe by Gareth Knight - http://www.amazon.com/The-Magical-Wo...pr_product_top Renaissance Tarot Book: A Guide to the Renaissance Tarot by Brian Williams - http://www.amazon.com/Renaissance-Ta...lle+tarot+book The Way of Tarot: The Spiritual Teacher in the Cards by Alejandro (beautiful name!) Jodorwsky - http://www.amazon.com/The-Way-Tarot-...ref=pd_sim_b_1 PPS: JDM's book/course, while intriguing, is a wee-bit pricy for me. @ $50 US. __________________ --Eeviee "Ignorance only makes Intolerance stronger..." Right now, I'm completely *smitten* with Melanchollic's system. (Not a book - but almost!) http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=112327 I like his rule of thumb: start broad, and only go as deep as necessary. Swords = bad/no Batons = moderately bad/probably not Coins = moderately good/probably Cups = good/yes Odd = active, even = passive. Higher ranking = better/stronger; Lower ranking = worse/weaker. So: "Will I get the job? Me: 3 batons. Job: 5 swords. Answer: 7 swords. No. (7 swords) It's just as well: I'm not a great fit (batons) and wouldn't be happy there (v batons) Same question. ;-) Me: ace swords. Job: queen swords: Answer: 3 cups. Yes, I'll get the job (cups). But probably won't be happy there. (swords) A hateful woman (queen) will be working against me! I love the Place book - just reread it myself! I have "The Way of the Tarot" (in french) - but I have to say, I've never understood *anything* on the tarot in french, starting with Papus. Their systems are just too arcane, and I have no idea how you move from their complex theories into something useful. ;-) I think most systems are going to be some form of numerology x elementology for the pips. ;-) Melanchollic has a thorough system worked out to assign specific meanings to every card. The Golden Dawn did too- and added in descending planets rotating through the signs to get the Thoth meanings; another system can be found here. http://web.eecs.utk.edu/~mclennan/OM.../PT.html#minor |

With Place, Huson and Williams you have a great start already - I haven't read the others you mention and didn't feel the need to read them so far. I am also not getting tired of repeating that in my opinion, the forum here at AT is the best ressource - have a look at the Table of Contents: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=31857 There is an incredible richness of information and insight to be found in the discussions of the single cards, in the "How can they be read" threads, in the general discussions of pips reading methods... If you accept the non linear and sometimes labyrinthic way the information is presented you will be richly rewarded. __________________ *** Se donner du mal pour les petites choses, c'est parvenir aux grandes, avec le temps. I haven't read the book, but I hope he sticks pretty much to the facts. Some of his speculation about the Rider-Waite Minor Arcana has been rather fanciful, to say the least, although, in all fairness, Waite himself must share some of the responsibility for this. |

I second jmd's book, and also the AT resources but I find Robert O'Neill's Tarot Symbolism is a rich treasury too . It's available through jmd's site as a re-print (much cheaper than the copies available on amazon) and comes as a printed book through the post.

If you get the jmd book (which I recommend also) then get the hard copy. The e-copy is a protected file and a complete nightmare to work with. I'm wishing I paid extra for the dead tree version because I just can't read the e-book comfortably and I can't do anything with it in order to make it readable on another device. Too bad because the content is superb. __________________ 'Monsters are real. And ghosts are real too. They live inside us. And sometimes, they win.' - Stephen King. One Deck Wonder: Thoth/Rosetta.
