My thoughts are that it does not have to be that complicated. If you really enjoy learning all that and want to do it just for the joy of it, then of course do so. But it is not necssary to go into that much depth. That is a personal choice. Some like to do that, others don'. But it is not necessary.

I nevder laernt Quabbalah (or however you spell that), astrololgy or any of that. And my readings are doing just fine. To me it's really more about finding and develipeing the reading style that works best for you. Mine tends to be mainkly intuitive and I get most of my answers from the card image. I don't need to know all about the traditions behind it all to do that. The picutres speak to me clearly without all that.

So...just to stay that all that study is only necessary if that is the way that you choose to do things. There is no right or wrong way to learn as long as you get to where you wean to go.

Recently I bought a Thoth deck because for years I was attracted to the art. I have been using my Enchanted Tarot deck exclusively for 20 years and have learned so much and gone so far on that deck and I wanted to put it away (she gets tons of use and she was starting to get thin/well worn) so I bought the Thoth.

As soon as I opened it my feeling was, "yuck" I just took an instant dislike to the deck. We just won't get along and I knew that instantly. That, and I read professionally so I knew a lot of especially my festival sitters would find this deck... well, not as warm and fuzzy shall we?

I ended up picking up the Morgan Greer for festival work due to its very large and discernable to a newbie pics meaning accessible to a festival goer with the intention of continuing to use Enchanted for private work. I am now using MG only I like it so much. I have a thing for 70s art and my clients all seem to really love the deck as well. Currently I am working through Greer's 21 ways to read the tarot with this deck.

In terms of my intuitive ability, as long as I find a deck where I feel an affinity my readings are accurate. To me, working with ANY deck is going to bring about a lot of insight and self mastery... I learn by doing though more than theoretical academics.
