other names for Temperance?

Hi all. I had searched this forum a few days ago and found a very interesting thread which referenced a few different names for Temperance in different decks. I remember the words alchemy and moderation coming up but there was at least one other name for the card which really helped me understand it and now I can't find that thread again. Does anyone know what that alternate name for i t might be?

In the Thoth deck it is called Art, which refers to the art of spiritual alchemy.

Interesting title. Temperance/Art is indeed a path leading to an experience of the Holy Guardian Angel (HGA). I think of the angel in the RWS Temperance card as the HGA, but I've seen it referred to as Michael the Archangel. It is depicted as a Rebus in the Thoth.

In the Merryday Tarot it's called 'The Time Lord'....Goodness knows why, put me right off the deck.

I'm putting in my vote for Archangel Raphael. If you assign the four cardinal virtues to the four elements, directions, and archangels, this one has the cups! (Temperance = cups = cardinal water/Cancer/south = healing = Raphael!)

And I'm NO!!! when it comes to the "time" interpretation for Temperance, just because it starts with "temp." That's just laziness, especially when the origin of the Hermit is Cronus/Father Time. If anyone is, HE's the "time lord."

Isn't Temperance usually Sagittarius? That might explain Michael.

ETA. One more point about Sagittarius and I'll try to shut up. Notice that the Temperance angel has one foot in water and the other on land. This indicates the position of Sagittarius between Scorpio (Water) and Capricorn (Earth).

Aha. I looked again through old threads and still did not find the one I was remembering but I believe Synthesis might have been that key-word I was looking for.

For what it's worth, I used the word synthesis in this post about the alchemy of Temperance. There are several interesting posts in the thread. I made the point that Temperance is the mystical marriage of the Sun and Moon (and other concepts to which those metaphors refer). It is wrongly thought that Temperance is but a boring Cardinal Virtue, when, in fact, it is one of the most exciting cards among the Major Arcana. It is the integration of the conscious and unconscious psyche of the individual, resulting in a complete human being. The process is essentially what C. G. Jung called individuation.

Wow I've never thought about it that way before O_O. Maybe I really don't give the RWS enough credit....

Temperance/Art is as Tiggy-cat pointed out, the representation of Synthesis. It is the Union of Opposites to create something entirely new. Hence the title.

Note Sagittarius, half man and half beast in one body. The bow and the arrow as an active and a passive tools acting as one unit.
