Sacred Sites: XV. Devil
I've been doing some research on this deck, so I thought I would share. It's mostly been Wikipedia surfing, but I have been able to find a few that weren't quite that easy! So to begin: XV. Devil: Rennes-le-Chateau. The devil depicted on the card as menacing the church from above is actually the supporter of the holy water stoup inside the church. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Asmodis_Rennes.JPG The “real” devil seems afraid and bowed down by the holiness he carries, instead of menacing. This is a great site for the Devil: A place of greed, abuse of priestly authority, deception, illusion, conspiracy theories, and mystery. As for the more positive aspects of the Devil card: We can see pleasure, fun, and attraction in the use of the site and its mysteries in popular novels, movies, and video games. And its connection with the Holy Blood, Holy Grail, Magdalene theory gives us hints of sexuality and procreation/incarnation. This could be my favorite card in the deck. Except that it has such a beautiful Temperance . . . __________________ Ask me about Arcana Stones! breathe in peace, breathe out love |

I've always thought of the "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" thing as being a metaphor for the terrible genocide that happened to the Cathars. I definitely see that as an aspect of The Devil, as the church and the French crown were motivated by fear and greed in that war. He definitely has a menacing look on his face in the card, not quite as playful as the Wikipedia photo. i wonder if that devil carving was popular as folk art. It reminds me of the poems and illustrations in the Carmina Burana. |
