Lightbulb New Wikipedia article on "Minchiate"

I have once again started a historical Tarot related article, this time about Minchiate. You are once again invited to read, critique, and edit it, knowing that any other user of Wikipedia is equally free to do the same.

That's great. It almost seems short but it's a nice start.

Looks great! I'm happy to see information on Tarot and its associated decks so thoroughly detailed on Wikipedia.

One minor thing: The "Brian Williams" link at the bottom only goes to a 'disambiguation' page which lists several Brian Williamses, none of which is the tarot author/artist.

Keep up the great work, ihcoyc!

Peace,

Melvis

Some notes to the Wikipedia article:

Scholars generally believe that the Tarot cards were invented in Lombardy and the Piedmont regions of northern Italy;

### never heard of Piedmont as the origin of Tarot cards, also can't imagine, that scholars generally believe this. Ferrara is not in the Lombardy nor in Piedmont and the earliest note comes from there. ###

they spread elsewhere in Italy early on. The Minchiate represents a Florentine variant on the original game. The name first appears in Italian sources dated to 1477,

#### 1471 precisely, 1477 is the second. The earliest should be a letter from Luigi Pulci o Lorenzo 1466 (however, it is lost, only transmitted by a second source). ###

in which it is listed in a list of games permitted by law; literary references may date to around 1440. ...

### What is "literary references" in this context? The word minchiatar appears in a poem of Burchiello around this time, it is not indicated, that the passage relates to a card playing game. ###

The game was also known as Gallerini or Germini.

The name Giuoco delle Minchiate means only "Minchiate's Game"; the name minchiate has no other certain meaning.

## that is not so clear. For instance it could mean "Penis" in vulgaric language. Also testicles are associated. ###

It has been suggested that the word minchiate comes from a dialect word meaning "nonsense" or "trifle." The word minchione is attested in Italian as meaning "fool," and minchioare means "to laugh at" someone. The intended meaning may be "The Game of the Fool," considering that the card "The Fool," also called "The Excuse," features prominently in the game play of all tarot games.

Cool

Stupid question...Just how does one pronounce Minchiate?

A pronunciation guide would be cool.

Talking How to pronounce Minchiate

Ok, being of Italian origin, I would like to address this question.

I know, it may seem backwards to us but in Italian, the "ch" is pronounced as a hard "c", and a "c" is more of a "c-h" sound (like the word "ciao").

So..

Min -- chia -- te

..is pronounced..

Meen -- kia -tay

...with the accent on the second syllable, and the second two syllables more slurred together than the first.

Apart from Maxxinewebb's post (and thanks for the pronunciation note - it may be worth adding to a number of articles on Tarotpedia), it may be worth noting that there is also now a whole wikimedia powered encyclopedia dedicated solely to Tarot: http://www.tarotpedia.com

Gees - I don't know how my previous post came out, but meant that apart from Maxxinewebb's post, the others were made much earlier and antedate the emergence of TarotPedia.com - my apologies if it sounded rather on the strange side!
