thanks all for your thoughtful responses, I *really* appreciate them all, even the haughty ones (heh). (and yes, as a matter of fact I *do* have standards... why do you think I care enough to come on here and ask?!)
I have committed to reading at the party on Friday and it would not be appropriate to back out at this time. since this is my very first job for the company, I don't know whether this is something they do for every event or if it has to do with the particular party.
I know this is a case of, you work for someone else and you do the job they tell you to do. I've been an independent (one way or another, from .commie to DJ to many other pursuits) for so long that I have become accustomed to the luxury of doing things as I see fit. here, that is clearly not going to be the case. (I was actually ok with it until I got to the hanged man and just thought WTF?!) but, I don't want to argue with the new boss. the smart way to go about that would be to first prove my awesomeness and then attempt to renegotiate! ;-)
also, I do agree that the tarot will get its point across one way or another (kind of how if you declaw a cat, it will become a biter). I've consulted the tarot itself and it doesn't seem to be worried or insulted. (and I do happen to have a deck with the Happy Squirrel on backorder so if I continue with this company I can try that.)
BTW I am also a mobile DJ with over a decade of experience, and I've played many many weddings (all by referral) over the years, so that's actually a great analogy for me... as well as a reminder that I can build up a business doing *real* readings (as I define that) if I just work at it. my wonderful partner designed me an awesome biz card, so that's a start.
I suppose on some level, I'm just gonna have to find my own way, no matter what. isn't that always the rub?! %-)
that said, this place is an awesome resource and I would love to hear further thoughts on this subject. thanks again for taking the time to respond to me!
