666. Crowley is God!

Crowley himself loved the limerick form to make scathing comments on people; usually those who sought to make a 'cult of Crowley'.

It is often said by critics of Crowley that he sought power and a personality cult of himself, there is little proof of that. He had the charisma, knowledge and at one time the money to create such if he so wished; but the evidence is that he turned, cruelly often, on those that sought to create a personality cult of 'Crowleyanity'.

The survival of such a cult is perhaps evidence of his greatest failure. Try as he might to offend sensibilities, to define himself as the Beast 666 and create a new pagan revival based upon witchcraft with all its negative associations; still people have turned him into a cult of personality, forgetting his emphasis that 'doing all I can, 666 is the number of a 'Man'."

What is 'Man' in this instance?

The grand heresiarch, a heretic being one who questions. A seeker of knowledge, in Paganism a hero, in Christianity an evil heretic. In paganism a journey through a mythological map of the human psyche, in Christianity a historical fact to be accepted in faith. In paganism an adventurous search for treasure; in Christianity a silver spoon in ones mouth [that turns out to be plated]. In paganism an explorer in the wilderness, in Christianity a child in a garden. In paganism a reward to be won, in Christianiabity an inheritance unearned. In paganism a King, in christianity a slave. 666 is not Crowley, but a part of every human that seeks and questions and yearns with a lust for life and love and light and liberty.

You must be very old to consider this a recent discovery! The earliest manuscript to contain the variant 616 is from the 5th century, and has been known for well over a century. I believe that even some Church Fathers we aware of the two traditions - 666 and 616.

For a long time the difference has been explained by reference to the name "Caesar Nero". In Hebrew letters, this could be spelled "QSR NRV" = 616. The more common variant would be "QSR NRVN" (Caesar Neron) = 666.

Australians tease us Kiwis for our accent we say 'Fish' as 'Fush' and 'Milk' as 'Mulk' and 'Six' as 'sux' so.....
