Interesting detail -- Fortune

Voron

Anyone notice the disembodied fist at the base of the Wheel of Fortune?

Anyone know its significance?

Thanks for pointing this out Voron. I don't recall noticing it before.

In The Book of Thoth, the Beast writes:

"This card is attributed to the planet Jupiter, 'the Greater Fortune' in astrology. It corresponds to the letter Kaph, which means the palm of the hand, in whose lines, according to another tradition, the fortune of the owner may be read."

So this hand seems to be Crowley's way of expressing the fickle hand of fate (expressed often in other Tarots by the goddess Fortuna) which is central to the mystery of the Tarot itself. Whether or not there actually is, humans of all cultures and at all times have recognized the presence of an "unseen hand" that guides destiny. The Tarot is but one means of trying to make sense of it all.

Throughout the Thoth deck, Lady Harris and Aleister Crowley placed little images that sometimes conflict and sometimes not.

Western, Hermetic, or Christian Cabbala attributes Kaph to Atu X. Kaph represents the palm of the hand.

Eastern, or Jewish Kabbalah attributes Yod, the closed hand (which turns the wheel).

Conflicting images can be seen in other Atu...look at the Tower, is it Ayin or Peh? (or both...)
