"The Moon" and the Sky Disc of Nebra

catlin

I went to see the Sky Disc of Nebra this week end (currently this interesting item of the Bronze Age is here at the REM in Mannheim).

Apart from the Sky Disc there were also a lot of other items of Bronze Age among which several sickle shaped votive offerings with a kind of engraved numerical code (maybe it was a kind of votive lunar calendar) but no numbers were more than 18. And lo and behold, which card is No 18 in tarot?! THE MOON!

The guide explained that 2 x 18 is 29 so another indication for the lunar cicle. BTW the visible golden dots (= stars) on the Sky Disc are 29 in number.

The Exhibition

In an extraordinary presentation the age of the Sky Disc is resurrected by numerous exhibits from the whole of Europe. The Sky Disc of Nebra and the Sun Chariot of Trundholm (Denmark), archaeological finds of world status, are the focus of attention in this unique display of the Bronze Age world.

The Sky Disc of Nebra (Saxony-Anhalt), discovered in 1999, is one of the most important archaeological finds of the last century. The bronze disc with gold appliqués shows the oldest concrete representation of the cosmos to date worldwide and is thus a key find not only for archaeology but also for astronomy and the history of religion.

The Nebra Sky Disc was deposited 3,600 years ago together with valuable swords, jewellery and tools on the summit of the Mittelberg hill near Nebra.

The find initiated a new presentation of the Bronze Age world in Central Germany. The natural riches of this region - copper, salt and fertile soils - formed the power basis for the resident Early Bronze Age princes, who exchanged goods from all regions of Europe.

Isn't it beautiful!! There was recently a TV programme on this in Oz. How wonderful it would be to see it. Maybe it will come here one day. :)
