Boiardo and Sola-Busca

Illustrious women (Giovanni Boccaccio)

I found here two ancient versions of a text by Giovanni Boccaccio written in 1361 (De Claris Mulieribus / Illustrious Women). It is a collection of 106 short byographies of famous women.
Of the two versions, one (des_dames_de_renom.pdf) is a French edition (1511).

The other (compendium_de_preclaris_mulieribus.pdf) is latin and fully illustrated: more than one hundred beautiful wood engravings! I think it is from the XV century.
The four Sola Busca queens are all present. I attach images showing:

1 Polyxena beeing killed on Achilles' tomb
2 Helena sailing form Greece to Troy (or vice versa)
3 Pallas with her owl and laurel tree inventing the weaving of wool
4 Olympias killing people in various ways

The other engravings are also quite interesting (I have seen a few "towers", "lovers", "suns", "moons" etc). Please, download the "compendium" document and have a look.

Marco,

You seem to truly be on to something. Those are fascinating images. I haven't had much time to contribute lately, but I am always interested in what you are up to! My download speed is very slow so I'm going to wait and download the compendium at school on Monday. It sounds awesome!
