Did a bit of research for those who may be even vaguely interested and it seems that indeed a basilisk did feature in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. These two links give some info

Yes there was, but from what I understand is that there are only two ways of killing a basilisk, weasel or mirror (or crystal globe).

The basilisk is the 'king of serpents' and was originally a form of Cobra-like snake which grew into the present image of the basilisk.

As a magical ability the basilisk can keep safe items and objects from theft--and seals from the medieval period use this image to keep the item safe.
