Rules for Tarot Poker

tarotbear

On another thread someone asked about playing 'Strip Tarot' - I don't know if there is such a thing ... but here are the rules for Tarot Poker - copy & pasted off another thread.

TAROT POKER

(This explanation was provided by Jana Hollingsworth in her comic strip "Pagan Cowboy Joe" and appeared in GREEN EGG, Yule 1991 issue)

If you can play poker you can play Tarot Poker. The Minor Arcana forms hands just like in regular poker.

The Major Arcana ranks above the Minor Arcana and higher-numbered Trumps rank above lower Trumps.

Major and Minor Arcana hands in ranking order. The Trump hands are marked with a star.

*Trump Straight Flush: any five Trumps in numerical order.
Royal Flush: Ace, King, Queen, Knight, Page all of same suit.
Straight Flush; any five cards in sequence, all same suit.
*Imperial Four: Magician, High Priestess, Empress, Emperor.
Four of a Kind.
Full House: three cards of one rank and two of another.
*Trump Flush: five trumps not in sequence.
Flush: five cards of one suit. not in sequence.
Straight: five cards in sequence, not the same suit.
*Astral Three: Star, Sun, Moon.
Three of a kind.
Two Pair.
One Pair.
*Trump pairs beat Minor Arcana Pairs, In descending order they are:
World and Fool
Judgement and Justice
Any TWO: Sun, Moon, Star
Devil and Lovers
Temperance and Chariot
Hermit and Hierophant
Emperor and Empress
High Priestess and Magician

Fool is wild card.
Wheel of Fortune is wild only in combination with other Trumps.

>> All trump combinations have to make magickal sense as the union of opposites. <<

{The author makes no mention of Strength, Hanged Man, Death, or the Tower. Does that make them a combination only with the Fool and Wheel cards? I know ZIP about poker playing. I read cards - not play with them!- tarotbear}

Ladies and gentlemen - if you please- ANTE UP!

Thanks you so much for this info! I was looking for ways to "play" with the tarot online a few days ago and I couldn't find anything good.

You worked in a casino for how long....? :D

Thanks for the rules though  Tarot Poker seems a lot more interesting (and approachable for my non tarot friends) than Tarrock etc.

The best thing about Tarot Poker is its easier to cheat. You can ask questions you know the answer too, and get a "royal flush" as the predicatable response ;) (Actually I tried this.... I still lost :| )

I wonder how many readers will peer across the table at your poker face, then say, "Er, just a minute..." while they scoop up all the cards and throw down a reading to see if you're bluffing or not.

"Aha! I see the Moon there...things are not as they seem...I'll raise you a buck!"

Two of my favorite things!

Tarot and Poker (particularly Texas Hold 'em) !

I think this will help me get to know my cards better - especially the ones I don't ever seem to get in readings.

Did it say how many cards to deal out?

Thanks, tarotbear!

So what with your Tarot Poker and my Tarot Solitaire (in the Games and fun section), no one has any excuse not to own a Tarot deck!

yes! Thats the way we used to play. If one can justify a superior hand, regardless (by reading not just content), and the other players agree, it wins.

"I will play the Emperor on that ... so what I say wins ! "

"I will trump you with the Aeon ... all past rituals and systems are now abrogate." :)

Oh, you can play ALL sorts of card games with them, not just poker and solitaire, even Gin-rummy

Lose a hand ? 1 shot of gin followed by one of rum })

A local Chicago comic said it best:

Did you hear about the guys who played poker with a tarot deck?
One of them got a full house and 3 people died!

And one more: a Friend told me about the movie called Nightmare Alley (about the carney trade.) A bunch of people used the psychic's tarot deck to play poker and when one laid out a good hand or a full house (I forget what he said) the Psychic (Played by Joan Fontaine) knew her lover was unfaithful.
