Is this a misprint in the Pictorial Key?

Abrac

In Waite's Pictorial Key, there's this sentence re the Wheel of Fortune:

"The transliteration of Taro as Rota is inscribed on the wheel, counterchanged with the letters of the Divine Name—to shew that Providence is imphed through all."

Is the word "imphed" a misprint? If not, anyone know what it means?

roppo

In the first edtion of PKT (1911) the part is "to shew that Providence is implied through all".
I suppose "imphed" in your edition is a misprint.

Abrac

Oh, great, appreciate it. :)

agent199

My 1910 copy has that same misprint too :)

Abrac

Wow, it's amazing to see how misprints can go uncorrected for so long. It sounds like it was corrected in roppo's version though. I've got a PDF but I can't remember where I got it.

roppo

Okay, let's examine my entire collection of PKT :)

1911 William Rider and Son edtiton : "implied"
1922 William Rider and Son edition : "implied"
1974 Rider & Company edition : "implied"

1959 University Books edition : "implied"
1973 Causeway Books edition : "implied"

1971 Steiner Books edition : "implied"
1993 US Games edition : "implied"
2008 US Games PCS Commemorative editon : "implied"

2007 Cosim Classic edition : "implied"
print on demand DODO press edition : "imphed" (!)

Although the PKT first edition was published on December 3rd, 1910, the year printed on the front page is 1911. The 1922 edition gives the first published year 1910, and later editons follow the case. I believe the "imphed" is a misprint due to the bad scanning OCR process.

Agent199, would you give us the detail of your 1910 copy?

agent199

I don't have the copy of the book with me.
But the digital versions of the book ARE showing that misprint.

Richard

My 1995 Barnes & Noble edition doesn't have the misprint. (I had a PKT which I bought in the 1960s, but it has disappeared.) "h" instead of "li" seems like a typical OCR problem.

gregory

All mine are implied. It does sound like an OCR scanning bloop.

I'd like to know how you know that without looking, too, agent199...
