I did not start learning the tarot with the RWS but I remember when I switched to an RWS deck it was much easier for me to relate the meaning of the cards (at that time I was reading the descriptions of the cards online or from books) to the RWS images. Exp.: suppose one doesn't know what is the meaning of 3 of wands. You read about it, then you look to the 3 of wands of an RWS deck, you most likely get an aha! moment, which I am not sure it works just as well when you look to the 3 of wands from for exp. the Shadowscape tarot. It is easier to remember. Just my experience.
