Order of elements

I hope I'm making sense with this question...

When considering the tetragrammation, the elements manifest eastwards in the order of fire, water, air & earth.

Why then, during ritual practice are the elements represented as:

Air - East
Fire - South
Water - West
Earth - North

The different ordering doesn't make sense to me.

Can't speak for anyone else but I usually start with Air / East because that is the direction of the sunrise, beginnings, new ideas - I continue with the other elements in the order that you've put them as that is the way the sun turns (in the northern hemisphere)
