There is a really nice book to introduce this deck- sort of a "Thoth Tarot for Dummies" that's called "Understanding Crowley's Thoth Tarot". I reccomend it highly for anyone who really wants to learn this deck, but doesn't know much about Crowley's system.

I just bought a new, small card, vividly coloured Thoth deck, after having my large green hued one for 25 years and never really paying attention to it, probably because of The Book of Thoth that accompanied my first deck (purchased together, of course). So, Thinbuddha, I really want to thank you for suggesting this other book. I really want to delve into the Thoth, and need all the help I can get. :D

Hey Alpha-Omega,

I've started a Thoth reading circle (in the Reading Circles area) for Thoth newbies, designed to help us mess around with the deck and get some feedback on how we're doing. Feel free to wander over and check it out. We're always looking for new people to play with.

Cheers!

The Angelpaths site (www.angelpaths.com) uses Thoth rather than Rider-Waite. They have a comprehensive overview of all of the cards and pick a card of the day. The forums there are very helpful but not as busy as AT.

Life After Crowley-thothaphobia

My Thoth deck arrived today, along with Lon Milo Duquette's book. I've been reading with Rider-Waite and lately, with the Anna K. And I'm not dissatisfied. I just want to see more, Seymore, if youget what I mean.

So I open the cards, I ordered "Standard", but these are HUGE. Oh well, all the better to see you with. my dear. Surprisingly easy to shuffle though. After all the rumors about Crowley, his weirdness, and the cards, what bugs me most is not the naked people or the suggestive drawings, not the sperm or the supposed satanism, it's those damn crosses on th back of the deck. HUGE ol' suckers I am reminded of my husband's reflection that the biggest problem with satanism is that it takes Christianity more seriously than it deserves.

Anyway, I did a 3 card spread, and it came out: the Hermit, Prince of Swords, and 6 of Swords. A lot to reflect on there; not bad. As Bogie says, "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship".

They're not Christian crosses. If you've not done so already check out in Duquette's book, there is a chapter devoted to what the image on the back of the cards represents. It has a Christian heritage (well, sort of) but is actually an illustration of the structure of a tarot deck (and also the universe, as undertstood in the hermetic qabalah) and not a Christian religious symbol. Or if it makes you feel better (it did me) I saw a Christian blog once ranting about the evils of Crowley as evidenced by the "crossed out cross" on the back of the deck. So you could run with that idea at least for ****s and giggles ;) Failing that, check out the Hanged Man where Crowley gives his opinion on the value of a crucifiction... (spelling intentional)

You can find lots of info on the Thoth card meanings on-line - you just need to know where to look.

Try these:http://www.tryskelion.com/tarotintro.htm - excellent site
http://www.angelpaths.com/working.html - click on each card to get an affirmation
http://www.supertarot.co.uk/lessons/03edrul.htm - loads of info on spreads, card meanings, elemental dignities - there's even a course.

The tryskelion.com address returned a 404 Not Found error. I tried a few variations but didn't come up with it. Google wasn't much help either, unless "Tryskelion's Deviant Art" has anything to do with it :)

You cannot access the Tryskelion's tarot section directly, never has, the website uses frames, you have to got here: http://www.tryskelion.com/tryskelion/

Then from the main website you go in The Arts in the menu on the left. On the right the menu on the right should change and you should now see: Astrology; Dreams and Dreaming; I-Ching; Tarot.

Sulis forgot to mention as well:
