Large Thoth - how to avoid the "greenie" version

I think the chance of getting a greenie from a first hand seller, i.e Amazon or the Book Depository is virtually 0%.

You don't find them anymore except on ebay and they're more expensive by dint of being vintage. Unless they have gone back into production again for some bizarre reason.

It is worth repeating that some people think greenie, see the large green box and think "ooh, that must be a greenie". A Thoth in a green box is not a greenie. I have a few greenies but one of my most gently green one has ended up being a favourite. Can't put my finger on why... Certainly not the greenness, it's something else. The card stock maybe, the sheer gentleness of hue...

Thanks, Le Fanu. This one was sealed and cheap from a newer seller who is not a tarot dealer, tiny amount of shelf wear on the box. Just happenstance, I guess. Perhaps I will come to love it!

Did you mean, a Thoth in a green box is not necessarily a greenie? This one is in the large green box; the color is pale in value and greenish-yellow in hue compared to my standard size, which is just a current USG retail printed in China (but lovely).

I was disappointed at first because I love the rich colors in my standard size, and I was looking forward to trimming the large. But after reading the comments here, I'm keeping an open mind. It's hasn't sucked me in yet though.

I think I will cut this one, see what happens.

Usually greenies have white boxes, but my first greenie was a Weiser in a green box and it had horrible color. Later I found a Weiser in the same green box but it was a newer print not a greenie and very nice.

A thoth in a green box is NOT necessarily a greenie, no, few are, in fact. MOST greenies are in white boxes - and some Thoths are very pale compared with others.

To give you an idea of what a GREEN greenie looks like there are a FEW shown here:

Added info on them here:

Two PIX of greenies:

Direct comparisons of a card from a greenie and a not greenie:

Another greenie card.

Should be enough to be going on with !!!!

A comparison of three Thoth decks of mine.

And something I had forgotten about:

WAIT !

Are there white borders on the backs ? If not - be VERY careful. In the old style ones with borderless backs - the images aren't the same size and you may end up with an unholy mess. There is a thread here where Jackdaw found this out the hard way.

Yeah I was noticing that. Taking off the front borders would cut into the design on the backs, specifically the edges of the lateral arms of the cross.

My objective in acquiring a large Thoth is for personal study, and taking off the text is a part of that for me. So I can either maul up the backs on this deck, or I can set this one aside and acquire another one for trimming.

What do the backs look like on the current large retail USG version?

Thanks.

Like those but with a very narrow white border.

And trimming THOSE works just fine. I don't recall being upset about damaging the look of the BACKS - it is the images on the front that simply don't work if you trim one with borderless backs.

And as far as I know ALL greenies have the borderless backs.

Oh, I see. These look consistent but I will have to check them over carefully before I break out the blade.
