The remainder of the Majors:
VII. IMAGINATION ("The Chariot")
- Seems to be many thoughts in 1 image
- Fantastic creatures - allegorical significance?
- Burning-glass a metaphor for the artist/inventor's mind
- Sun is perhaps, the fuel of Divine Thought?
- However, caution is advised against pure "daydreaming"
- Don't allow yourself to be "carried away" by your imagination
VIII. STRENGTH
- Image that of Herakles & the Nemean Lion, who also figures in the original VS decks for the image of this virtue
- The virtue is about aggression controlled, & "might" as such (i.e. a Virtue), as opposed to "Might Makes Right" ("Right Makes Might"??)
IX. HERMIT
- Another self-portrait in age
- An idea that the artist is solitary in his world
- Being away from everyday, "popular currents of thought"
- Counsel for introspection to reveal the Soul to one
- Meditation a by-word
- But also, "antisocial"?
X. TIME ("The Wheel of Fortune")
- Experience is tantamount in life
- Truth is the only source of anything worthwhile
- All leads to mystery: "Omnia exeunt in Mysterium"
- Just desserts, one's "Karma code"
XI. PASSOVER ("The Hanged Man")
- Christ's face from "The Last Supper"
- Sacrifice the key-word
- "Traitor" wrongly accused & punished, perhaps?
- Giving up one's own personal "agenda"
XIII. DEATH
- Another Christ's head with crown of thorns
- DV's views on crucifixes & such-like (he never depicted any in all his career) very much those held by myself!
- The great overthrowing of Death
- A simple statement by CM & suddenly I understand the word "saved" in the Christian context: "The redemption of Mankind (sic) through the sufferings of the Saviour who undergoes Death so it can have no final sting..." (I understand this phenomenon as proof of something that has been there all along)
- Immortality through personal glory in life (also a Pagan concept)
XIV. TEMPERANCE
- Adjustments, key-word
- Analogy of the legend of the Ermine, who dies rather than sully the purity of its coat
- Another Virtue
- Renaissance: "Temperance" = self-respect
- Purity & constancy also key-words
- Being temperate, i.e. balanced, in one's approach to one's self
XV. PAIN & PLEASURE ("The Devil)
- Double image, twins sharing 1 body
- Reed = uselessness (Pleasure), scourge = Pain
- Cannot have the 1 without the other
- One pays for pleasure with pain
XVI. DELUGE ("The Tower")
- (CM) "If there is no temperance in our experience of life, we fall under the effects of what we have unwittingly created."
- Taking responsibility when necessary & wherever possible
- The wisdom to do so when immersed in a so-called "act of God"
XVII. WAY-SHOWER ("The Star")
- In the Tarot, my own personal favorite card
- St. John the Baptist, who shows the way toward "Salvation"
- Stars may be long gone out, yet in the "Now" they illuminate our way
XVIII. CONCEPTION ("The Moon")
- "Leda & the Swan"
- Swan = Zeus (Father-God)
- The Moon borrows its light from The Sun
- Da Vinci's longing for flight (an unconscious impulse?)
- A further reference to the "glory of the Self"
XIX. BIRTH ("The Sun")
- "The Adoration of the Magi"
- "The Sun of Mankind (sic)" - the birth of Christ
- Triumph over all odds
- All-powerful force
XX. RENEWAL ("Judgment")
- Unknown allegory, depicting the glove of the Earth surmounted by an eagle with a crown (a wolf not in the image = the Pope, the eagle King of France?)
- Also about trust in God
- A meeting of the sacred & the secular in Renaissance "Humanism"
XXI. THE WORLD
- "Vitruvian Man"
- Classical architect, Vitruvius ( = "glass")
- Perfect, harmonius proportion
- Man as Microcosm
- CM: "The beggar who began this long journey as The Fool is free from ignorance at last." DV again - full circle!
