World Card "correction"?

RatQueen

I can't help but notice in my Rider Waite Tarot deck it looks like the "W" on the wording of the World Card have been altered. It almost looks like the "W" was once two letter "Y"s or something. I noticed the same thing on my Universal Waite World card so it isn't just my particular printing of the deck. Anyone ever noticed that and have any theories on it?

Welcome to Aeclectic!

I've never noticed that before. But I don't think it's a "correction" as much as natural differences in hand lettering, which is how the titles were done on the original RWS deck.

Looking at all of the cards that have "W" in their titles,

Wheel of Fortune is "normal"
Tower is like the World
Ace Swords is like the World
Page, Knight, Queen and King Swords are "normal"
Ace Wands is kind of in between the two
Page, Knight and King Wands are "normal"
Queen Wands is like the World

I can see what you mean. It does look like two Ys in a way. But I agree with Rodney. If you look through all the lettering you won't find any two that are 100% alike. That's the beauty of hand lettering. Whoever came up with the brilliant idea to change the lettering in RWS to typeset needs their head examined, imho.

World Card in the USG version also gave the lady a "boobie lift" .... LOL.

The W's on the Queen of Wands and Ace of Wands look kinda funky too.

LOL at "boobie lift"
