How to Identify Aspects

AquarianGoddess

What is an aspect? An aspect is the distance between two planets in degrees.

The first step in learning to identify an aspect is to learn the element and modality of each sign; there are four elements (fire, earth, air, and water) and three modalities (cardinal, fixed and mutable).

1st Sign-Aries/fire/cardinal
2nd Sign-Taurus/earth/fixed
3rd Sign -Gemini/air/mutable
4th Sign-Cancer/water/cardinal
5th Sign-Leo/fire/fixed
6th Sign-Virgo/earth/mutable
7th Sign-Libra/air/cardinal
8th Sign-Scorpio/water/fixed
9th Sign-Sagittarius/fire/mutable
10th Sign-Capricorn/earth/cardinal
11th Sign-Aquarius/air/fixed
12th Sign-Pisces/water/mutable

BY CATEGORY:

FIRE: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
EARTH: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
AIR: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
WATER: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

CARDINAL: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
FIXED: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
MUTABLE: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces

Okay, now keep in mind that each sign has 30 degrees (0-29). 30 times 12 signs equals 360 degrees, the full circle.

THE CONJUNCTION –0 DEGREES APART. Is when two planets are usually in the same sign, same degree, example: Sun at 4 Virgo, Mercury at 4 Virgo; this is an exact conjunction.

THE SEXTILE – 60 DEGREES APART. The elements that “go together” sextile each other…fire and air go together because air feeds the fire; earth and water go together because water feeds earth. Example: Moon at 22 Pisces (water), Saturn at 22 Taurus (earth); this is an exact sextile (two signs apart).

THE SQUARE – 90 DEGREES APART. Each sign of a particular modality square the other signs of that modality that are three signs away from it…Example: Mars at 17 Capricorn, Jupiter at 17 of Libra (both of cardinal modality). This is an exact square (three signs apart). Note: Capricorn and Cancer oppose each other (both cardinal) because they're six signs apart. The same applies to Libra and Aries.

THE TRINE – 120 DEGREES APART. Each sign of the same element trine the other signs of that element. Example: Venus at 28 Aries, Pluto at 28 Leo (both of the fire element). This is an exact trine (four signs apart).

THE OPPOSITION – 180 DEGREES APART. Signs in the same modality but different elements oppose each other. Example: Sun at 9 Gemini (air/mutable), Neptune at 9 Sagg (fire/mutable). This is an exact opposition (six signs apart).

Now, there is a matter of an Orb. What is an orb? An orb is the difference between the exact aspect and the actual aspect. Example: Mercury at 5 Aquarius, Mars at 8 Aquarius. This is a conjunction with a three-degree orb, meaning there is a three-degree difference between the exact aspect and the actual aspect. The matter of how wide an orb can be used is a personal choice, however, the average is between three and seven degrees. If Mercury is at 5 Aquarius and Mars is at 21 Aquarius, although in the same sign, this is not a conjunction as the orb is too wide.

Remember, you're counting degrees apart...not houses apart.

Ramses

yeah...
and pretty great that you mentioned the orbs...
once I was just checking the aspects through the elements, modalities, etc...and forgot all about the degrees and orbs...so, I got some aspects calculated wrong....

thanks AquarianGodess...

LOVE,PEACE AND HARMONY TO YOU ALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
