NEW MOON IN CANCER - 7TH JULY
THE SABIAN SYMBOL FOR TODAY IS CANCER 15: A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO'VE OVEREATEN AND ENJOYED IT
You'd think that those who organised the G-8 meeting in Scotland this week looked at the new Moon and consulted the Sabian Symbols in order to find the best date to hold it. It really is ironic that they are meeting on the day of the new Moon in Cancer - Cancer ruling nourishment, nurturing, home and family values, food on the table, mom and apple pie and all that.
Further to the symbolism of the new Moon in Cancer is the fact that it falls on the Sabian Symbol of CANCER 15: A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO'VE OVEREATEN AND ENJOYED IT. This Symbol speaks volumes about what's going on with the G-8 meeting and Bob Geldof's music aid fest. The rich and powerful nations, after consuming and gorging and indulging themselves in the 'market place' are to consider giving relief to the very people who are being forced to do the extreme opposite.
"A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO'VE OVEREATEN AND ENJOYED IT" also reflects on what's happening with industrial reforms lately. CEO's and upper management are now making so much money compared with the worker on the ground that it's somewhat of a farce. Labor movements and unions are losing more and more of their bargaining power.... they're losing any kind of power, really, while the corporates spend their weekends away in the islands and receive million dollar handshakes. The labor movement is being squashed everywhere and we're told to like it or lump it.
WHAT THIS NEW MOON MEANS FOR YOU
How's the credit card doing? That could be groaning from a little indiscreet retail therapy. Or have you not spent money frivolously for months and just wish you could splash out?
Here's my take on this degree from my book "360 Degrees of Wisdom: Charting Your Destiny With the Sabian Oracle" (published by Penguin USA (Plume) ).
Commentary: ‘A Group of People Who Have Overeaten and Enjoyed It’ is an image of people consuming to their fill and having a good time of it. It seems they have a big appetite and have over indulged themselves, and are now feeling satisfied. They have taken time out to satisfy their hunger and ‘Enjoy’ the leisure of catching up with what’s going on with others. There is a certain measure of pleasure and satisfaction, but it is probably only temporary, and they may need to return to work. This can be difficult, as overeating can lead to dulled senses and an inability to make intelligent decisions. People become energetically bound up in digesting what they’ve “consumed”, while the body is preoccupied with handling the load. This can make the mind and body slow and, sometimes, lazy. This Symbol can picture enjoying “consuming” anything, not only “eating.” They' probably enjoy many of the good things in life.
Oracle: It may be that you, or someone else, have overindulged in material objects or success. For now, enjoy your good fortune. Beware, however, as sometimes “feeding frenzies” can turn into issues that need to be sorted out later. Problems can be experienced through overspending, overeating, putting on weight, etc. Constantly overeating or overspending in an attempt to feel better can lead to issues of self-worth, greed and debt. There is possibly a need to curb this indulging. Realize when it’s time to return to work, and to be productive instead of just swallowing, or “consuming” more and more. In fact, there may be a need for “tightening the belt”. Commodities, like food, etc., may run short now due to extravagance or excess.
Keywords: Consumerism. Communal cohesion through indulging in the senses. Satisfied hunger. Commercialism and longing to own things. Eating disorders. The right of everyone to enjoy food and nourishment. Big business. Success. Enjoying “the good life”. Having plenty. Abundance. Temporary fulfillment.
The Caution: Self-indulgence through the senses. The “haves” and the “have-nots”. People going without so that others can have more. Monopolization. Bloating. Feeling that one deserves everything on a platter. Overweight. Bad nourishment. Eating binges. Indigestion. Obsession with ownership. Deprivation. Exploiting resources. Overspending. Gluttony.

THOUGHTS FOR THIS NEW MOON
Those of us who have running water, food on the table every night, a safe place to live and access to good medical treatment should really remember our blessings on this new Moon as more will come as a result.
It will be interesting to see what happens over the few days around this new Moon - I suspect there will be a lot of wrangling and hot heads, not to mention more demonstrations. This new Moon is square Mars which is conjunct the North Node, which means (in English!) emotions are bound to be running high, with anger, charged up events and explosions of one kind or another..
Interestingly, Mars is in Aries at this full Moon on a very intriguing degree: Aries 17: Two Prim Spinsters Sitting Together in Silence. This Symbol can and often does show people who have little to say to each other, perhaps they're keeping secrets from each other, maybe they already know all the secrets between them and little needs to be said. It could be that they no longer get on and have nothing to say. It could also be, with Mars on this Aries degree, that this shows people not being able to get a word in edgeways as each chats away, whether they are listening to each other is not clear. That's for you to decide. Perhaps people are slanging off, trying to make their point clear to the other without really listening to the other's input or response.
Two days after the new moon, on 9th July, the Sun moves to Cancer 18: A Hen Scratching For Her Chicks - will mothers and fathers in the more impoverished nations soon be able to provide nourishment for their family? I think not, not for a while at least as Mars squaring the Moon's nodes doesn't look very promising. Still, that Mars may awaken enough people and make it clear to the G-8 that the world won't put up with some people being enormously overweight (read fat) whilst some are incredibly malnourished and disadvantaged.
Here's hoping.
Let's count our blessings and be grateful for the wonderful people in our lives.
Cheers to a great new Moon in Cancer!
Hope you're having fun
