Thank you, Sweet Intuition! That ties it all together so nicely, and is exactly what I was looking for. :)

OOpsie... Took care of that.

Gosh I've been having too many blonde moments lately... which is odd considering I'm dark and exotic!

Hi all,

I'm a total newbie to astrology and the Golden Dawn system (so apologies if this is a really basic question! :D), but could someone point me towards a website, book etc that actually says what each of the 7 planets mean (in the GD context)?

Is there a difference between what the GD says a planet means, and what I'd find in a general (modern) textbook (e.g Mercury is to do with communication etc etc)?

I'm currently studying Clive Barrett's Ancient Egyptian Tarot (which seems to draw quite heavily on the Thoth and GD), and I'm interested to learn how the GD system uses planets and signs to determine a card's meaning.

But I need to know what the planets mean first (from a GD point of view)!

...and I guess the signs too! :D

Thanks.

Welcome Teomat.

In our studies Book T and the Astrological signs which starts here, http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=96911 I have not seen a difference of meanings pointed out.
But here http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=96573is a good list of resources where you might find more information.
Good question. One I didn't think to ask.

Thanks AW. I'll have a look through the resources.

As a newbie, I would really like to figure out the 'essence' of each sign and planet, and then work out how they become meanings for each card.

For example, I've been trying to figure out the astrological meaning for the 9 of Disks (Venus in Virgo) - i.e what this actually means. However googling this just brings up info on people who are born with this characteristic (and their traits). It makes it a bit difficult to figure out what I can take from it in terms of a generic meaning, rather than as a personality trait.

Anyway, I've noticed some of the other threads in this forum might help me out, and I'll take a peek.

Hey Teomat,

I also really recommend looking at traditional sources. Material predating the modernist revision of astrology is much meatier and more practical than the average new age piffle.

All of the following are cornerstone documents of western astrology (and thence western esoterica) and if you don't want to spring for purchasing physical copies, all are available freely online as txt files, PDF's and HTML files... definite have a look around Joseph Peterson's invaluable resource: http://www.esotericarchives.com/esoteric.htm... but for one stop no-cost shopping SkyScriipt has a TON of brilliant astrology texts just waiting to be downloaded: http://www.skyscript.co.uk/texts.html

But here are some must reads for serious inquiry:
Lilly's Christian Astrology (http://www.astrologiamedieval.com/tabelas/William_Lilly_Christian_Astrology.pdf)
Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy (http://www.esotericarchives.com/agrippa/index.html) specifically Book II (http://www.esotericarchives.com/agrippa/agrippa2.htm)
Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos (http://www.astrologiamedieval.com/tabelas/Tetrabiblos.pdf)
Ibn Ezra's writings (an excerpt of his Book of Wisdom is available here: http://www.skyscript.co.uk/bow.html)
Morin's Cabal of the 12 Houses Astrological (http://www.skyscript.co.uk/cabal.html)

Actually, if you're looking for leaner reading material... the rest of Deb Houding's site (http://www.skyscript.co.uk/) is peppered with wonderful articles, and you should definitely go poke around Ben Dykes' (http://www.bendykes.com/) and Chris Warnock's domains (http://www.renaissanceastrology.com/).

Thanks Scion. :)

I really like the SkyScript site, particularly the way the planets are described (astrologically, historically, mythically AND scientifically) - it really helps to get a good 'feel' for what they mean.

I also really like the threads in this forum. It's making me look at the RWS and Thoth in a whole new light. Makes me realise that it's not all just pretty pictures...there's actually a clever system behind it.

Thanks for mentioning my site. :)
I'm glad to hear that "someone" has found it useful. I haven't received much in the way of feedback on it. (neither good nor bad)
