Minchiate Etruria by Il Meneghello

Aerin

I've bumped this because I've been thinking of getting it from Alida.

I have a couple of Minchiate decks and although I don't try to read with them any longer I still find them intriguing to study, especially when topics come up in the history forums.

I regret not still having this one but it went to someone who will get more use of it, which is good.

Kilts Knave is your man for this deck, I hope you enjoy exploring it, but for me its more of a reference deck now.

It's the Etruria I fancy.

I have the Brian Williams deck and book (without which I wouldn't contemplate the deck!) and also the Lo Scarabeo deck which goes in and out of being up for trade. I'm thinking of replacing the latter with this deck.

I think that I have discovered why I like the style of the cards, and it is very personal. They remind me of illustrations in an old Victorian book of nursery rhymes my uncle used to play from. Mind you, most of them were pretty gory (if not Gorey-esque) come to think of it and involved small children/ pets/ birds/ whatever coming to various sticky ends or being impossibly virtuous.

Still, I am attracted to the cards.

ps My goodness! Who'd have thought it. The book was, in fact, this very text http://www.nursery-songs.com/songs_and_engravings.htm

Some of the engravings are scary. Sticky ends: http://www.nursery-songs.com/song_pages/song_15.htm http://www.nursery-songs.com/song_pages/song_17.htm

irritatingly virtuous http://www.nursery-songs.com/song_pages/song_05.htm http://www.nursery-songs.com/song_pages/song_28.htm

Ive also been tempted to order the Meneghello Minchiate. I already have the LoS Minchiate which I love and - oddly - the gloss doesnt really bother me. Yet I know that the Meneghello cards are something else altogether , but on their site, it looks like the images (they only reproduce a couple I think) look identical to the LoS ones which - to me - didn´t justify the extra cost. Are there differences or is it just card stock and finish? The comparison which Debra posted arent these two decks are they? I get so confused with these Minchiate...

I quite liked the one which was listed as Etruria, but haven´t seen this on Alida. I only order from Alida as it´s virtually next door and there´s no conversion charge.

I also have the Williams set. Informative book. Made the deck - at last - readable. I don´t like the cards though...

I think they are the same images as on the LS Etruria, it's just that it looks older because of the way the deck is produced. I really like the Il M. decks, look and feel, although more for sighing over than for making them work hard.

The Etruria just looks finer, and it is older as well so you don't have to compromise 'fineness' for allegedly more authenticity. If that is a concern.

If I can sell the LS (which is OOP) then perhaps I could have the Il M. .... was my thinking.

I go in and out of favour with the Brian Williams images. I do think they shed light on the older images though, and yes the book is great.

Though no historical expert on the Minchiate by any stretch of the imagination (thank you however Moonbow*), the Il Meneghello version is a repainting of the Lo Scarabeo photocopy deck.

I believe the current IM ed. on alidastore is the 2002 reprint, only because you spoke of lamination. My 1986 ed. is not laminated.

Jackdaw*, the real expert :) , would be the one to fill us all in and/or confirm/deny this.

The Williams set is essential for the book alone, though the cards will grow on you if you give them a chance.

And, of course, the shameless plug. The only way IMAO to get "good" at reading with this deck is practice, practice, practice. Here is the Thread:

Any Il Meneghello deck is like getting a Matisse. The handmade box, the seal, the fine printing, the paper, the touch of Osvaldo himself! Always get the Il M. whenever you can. They are true art objects.

I also have the 2002 Etruria ed. in the box with the wax seal. It is laminated. The non-laminated version shuffles better.

I know what you mean about going in and out of favour with the Willliams´cards, Aerin. I often get them out and look at them and think maybe, but they´re a bit too sparse for my liking, look a bit too much like toy cards. But with the book, Im determined one of these days to really get into the deck (the LoS one, or if I order it, the Meneghello one). It´s a deck which attracts me massively. One of these days Im going to do an IDS with it (and the Etteilla and Lenormand... and maybe runes and I-ching! So many things I want to study more)....

I think the LoS deck is one of their nicest decks ever. Shame its going (or gone ) OOP....
